Putting in a poor performance against Iceland on the 7th June would have been the the last thing that England manager Gareth Southgate needed, with the tournament favourites losing 1-0 to the 72nd ranked nation in the world. This is a test against a better side, albeit a side that England should definitely be beating.

Surprisingly, these nations have never met at men’s senior level, and I don’t expect the first meeting to be a goal fest given England’s recent nervy performances. In the previous Euros, England topped their Group, winning two and drawing 1 of their 3 games, displaying strong defensive performances to keep 3 clean sheets, however, the finalists only scored twice in the process.

Despite the Serbia squad containing top-level players such as Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, there is an evident contrast in the quality of the squads selected to represent these nations at this tournament. England will likely have too much quality for Serbia to handle, and with world-class individuals such as Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham at Gareth Southgate’s disposal, a winning start to this tournament is much expected.

Based on their slow start to the most recent Euro’s, despite expecting England to win, I have selected the win to be by a goal to nil, the same result that England had against both the Czech Republic and Croatia in the Euro 2020 Group Stage.
