Sunderland vs Coventry City Bet Builder Tip – A 10/3 Sunday Lunchtime Betting Tip at The Stadium of Light
The only Championship fixture on Sunday sees us head to the North East, where Sunderland host Coventry City in the 12pm kick off and we have a bet builder tip covering goals, cards and shots on target.
A huge crowd is expected at the 49,000 seater stadium to see Sunderland’s first match back in this league after play-off delight at Wembley in May. Expectations are high within the Sunderland camp, but will they be able to cope with the pressure? They will look to Scottish striker Ross Stewart to fire them to glory this season.
Coventry finished 12th in the league last season, and I expect them to finish mid-table again this term. Transfer rumours surround one of their key players Callum O’Hare, so I do feel the success of their season will depend on whether Burnley are able to capture his signature before the window closes.
These two sides have only faced off four times in the last decade, all of which were League One fixtures, with two of them being draws and Coventry being victorious in the other two which included a 5-4 thriller at this venue back in April 2019.
I actually think this game is a tricky one to call, therefore I’m leaving the match result alone. But I do expect goals and cards so that is the angle we will take when looking for a Sunday winner.
Sunderland vs Coventry City Bet Builder Tip
- Over 2.5 goals
- Over 2 cards in the match for both teams combined
- Ross Stewart over 0.5 shots on target
- Matt Godden over 0.5 shots on target
ODDS – 10/3 with Bet365
TOTAL GOALS – OVER 2.5
A blockbuster crowd is expected at The Stadium of Light on Sunday, and I think that will lead to a passionate and fiery game. When this happens, it’s quite easy for home players to get a bit nervous and the away side to be intimidated, leading to mistakes therefore I think there will be plenty of chances for both sets of forwards on Sunday.
This selection landed in both of the respective sides opening fixture in the 21/22 season, and I think that trend will continue here.
TOTAL CARDS – OVER 2 FOR BOTH TEAMS COMBINED
With this selection, you’re looking for three or more cards to be shown in the match. It doesn’t matter who gets carded or what colour the card is, as long as three or more are shown this is a winner. As mentioned above, I think this will be a feisty game and Darren Bond, the man in the middle, will be a busy man on Sunday.
The most likely culprits for a booking tip will be the Black Cats midfielder Corry Evans, who picked up 9 yellows in League One last season, and Gustavo Hamer for the Sky Blues who often found himself in the referee’s bad books with a staggering 14 yellow cards.
PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET: OVER 0.5 ROSS STEWART (SUNDERLAND)
Stewart was Sunderland’s main man last term, and his goals proved vital in sealing promotion back to the Championship. He scored at Wembley in the final, which was one of 26 league goals scored throughout an impressive campaign.
The 6ft2 Scot is a right handful, who presses and works tirelessly from the front. He is also very technically gifted and is capable of scoring from all angles. I think he will cope with the step up to this league and score goals in the famous red and white to ensure Sunderland at least stay up this season. Wingers Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts will look to feed him at every opportunity, and I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t hit the target in front of his home fans on Sunday.
PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET: OVER 0.5 MATT GODDEN (COVENTRY CITY)
I was torn between Coventry attacking duo Matt Godden and Viktor Gyokeres here, who scored 30 league goals between them last season. Youngster Gyokeres scored an impressive 18, whilst the experienced Godden bagged 12.
There are a few reasons I’ve sided with Godden in the Bet Builder. His minutes per goal last season was very good, averaging a goal every 139 minutes, compared to Gyokeres goal every 207 minutes. He also has a decent record against Sunderland having scored in two of the three games he’s faced them. He will also be on penalties should they be awarded one and the natural finisher will look to shoot in and around the 18-yard area given half a chance.
