Andrew Robertson signs a new long-term deal with Liverpool

Holding a four-point advantage heading into this weekend’s match with Crystal Palace, fans around Anfield will also be excited by the news that Andrew Robertson has signed a new five-year deal.

Playing a key role in Jurgen Klopp’s rise to the top of the Premier League table, the 24-year-old has cemented his spot as a fan favourite on Merseyside.

The newly crowned Scotland captain joined Liverpool for £8million after being relegated with Hull in the summer of 2017.

Robertson signs until 2024

With some calling him the best left-back in the top-flight, Robertson’s impressive rise has played a huge part in a Liverpool defence that have conceded just 10 goals this season.

Having helped Liverpool reach the Champions League final last year, the No.26 has started all but two Premier League games for the leaders this term.

Speaking to Liverpool’s website after putting pen to paper on his new five-year deal, Roberston spoke about how he did not hesitate when offered the chance to extend his stay at Anfield.

“As soon as the club came to me, it was a no-brainer for me – I want to stay here, so as soon as they put an offer on the table it was signed as quickly as that,” he told the club’s website.

“It was a pretty easy contract for me and I’m sure for the club as well. We both agreed very quickly, that’s why it’s been done so quickly.

“Getting to know the lads and working with all the staff at Melwood has been a pleasure. The best thing about work is when you love coming in every day – and that’s what I do here.

“I am glad I have extended my stay and hopefully we have a lot of good days ahead.”

Awarded Scotland’s captain’s armband last September, Robertson has joined a long list of first-team stars who have pledged their future to Liverpool.

Over the past 12 months, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and fellow defender Joe Gomez have signed a new deal with the Reds.

 

Eyes set on securing silverware

Along with discussing his excitement at signing a new deal, Robertson was quick to acknowledge Liverpool’s need to lift a first piece of silverware under the former Borussia Dortmund boss.

Despite reaching the Champions League final last season, two well-publicised mistakes from Loris Karius saw Real Madrid leave with a 3-1 win and their third consecutive title.

“I hope to achieve success as a team over the course of this new deal, this club demands trophies and too long has probably passed without trophies.

“So I hope to help bring another couple of trophies to this club and help push in that direction because the fans demand it and the club demands it, so that’s what we aim to give.

“We came close, of course we have with the Champions League and things like that, but it’s about taking that next step and hopefully getting a winner’s medal around your neck, whatever competition it is. That is the main aim for us.”

With Liverpool looking to land their first league title in the Premier League era, Klopp has made it no secret that he is desperate to get his biggest stars tied down.

When asked about Robertson’s new long-term deal, Klopp said:

“I think of all the contract renewals I have been involved with, this one was done in almost record time.”

“It’s fair to say Robbo didn’t hesitate for even a second when we spoke about extending his stay at our club for longer.

“He might be from Glasgow originally, but everything about him screams Liverpool. It has been fantastic to see him grow, develop and improve.”
