Eddie Howe offers double injury update following Newcastle’s Champions League heartbreak
Suffering their first Champions League defeat of the season thanks to a 1-0 loss against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, Eddie Howe has offered a fitness update on both Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy.
A mixed injury update for Howe & Newcastle
Along with missing out on a golden Champions League opportunity at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night, Newcastle fans would have also been concerned by the site of two of their first-team superstars limping off with respective injury blows.
With attacking talisman Isak forced to be withdrawn after just 15 minutes due to another groin issue, matters were not helped as the versatile Murphy appeared to sustain a major shoulder injury just seconds after coming off the bench.
While the former Bournemouth boss might be optimistic that Isak can make a quick turnaround, there is a growing worry that Murphy could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“It was a massive blow to lose both players. Alex doesn’t look too serious but i’s a reoccurrence of his groin problem and Murph’s is a shoulder problem. We’re hopeful neither are serious but Jacob’s probably looks like it is.”

Newcastle skipper calling on an immediate response
While Newcastle might still be dreaming of the chance to grab a famous Champions League knockout stage ticket this season, Wednesday’s 1-0 loss would have certainly been seen as a missed opportunity at St. James’ Park.
Turning their attention back to Premier League duties this weekend when they travel to Wolves on Saturday evening, Howe’s men will know the importance of claiming an immediate response in the Midlands.
Watching their extended eight-match unbeaten run come to an abrupt end against Borussia Dortmund in midweek, skipper Jamaal Lascelles has called on the top-four contenders to quickly dust themselves down.
“We fancied ourselves here at St. James’ and we have to play them again. We’ve got to bounce back”
