Liverpool Next Manager Odds: Who are the leading contenders to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool?

Can Liverpool get better?

In a stunning announcement on Friday morning, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season.

While the Reds might find themselves at the heart of a Premier League title scrap, the former Borussia Dortmund boss stated that “he is running out of energy” and is seeking a break away from the managerial hot seat.

Cementing his spot as one of the greatest Liverpool managers in history after joining the Premier League giants back in 2015, Klopp has overseen a period of success, winning the Champions League in 2022 and ending a 30-year wait for a domestic crown in 2020.

As the Anfield hierarchy draws up their possible replacements for the iconic Liverpool boss, we have taken an in-depth look at who the bookmakers have installed as their leading candidates.

Xabi Alonso

While Bayer Leverkusen might have eventually missed out in their bid to claim a Champions League return last season, the German outfit are in the midst of a history-making flurry this time around.

Leading the chase at the top of the Bundesliga table and tipped as a leading contender to be crowned domestic champions for the first time since 2011, Leverkusen have already underlined their status as one of Europe’s ultimate surprise packages.

Gaining a reputation for their ultra-attacking approach, Xabi Alonso has certainly been the architect behind Leverkusen’s success this season and the ex-Liverpool midfielder finds his stock at a red-hot high.

Spending five years at Anfield as a player between 2004-2009, it appears that the former Real Sociedad coach still has plenty of admirers around the red half of Merseyside.

While Alonso might have been heavily linked with a blockbuster move to Real Madrid last year, the 42-year-old now finds himself tipped as the standout contender to replace Klopp over the summer.

Roberto De Zerbi

Although fans around the Amex might have been heartbroken back in September 2022 as Graham Potter was appointed Chelsea boss, Roberto De Zerbi has certainly taken Brighton to the next level.

Breaking a string of records on the south coast last season and guiding the Seagulls to a famous European finish, the Italian tactician has received a string of plaudits from across England’s elite.

Watching Brighton breeze their way to a Europa League knockout stage ticket last month, De Zerbi’s side have continued to shine with their free-flowing performances and the former Sassuolo boss has attracted plenty of heavyweight admirers.

Alongside being previously tipped as a long-term replacement for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Italian icons Juventus have also previously been rumoured over a potential swoop for the Brighton boss.

With Liverpool fans becoming accustomed to an energetic and front-foot approach during Klopp’s reign over the past nine years, De Zerbi would offer a similar philosophy.

Pep Lijnders

Although there might be a long list of established European managers who would all be keen on replacing Klopp at Anfield, the Liverpool hierarchy could be looking to appoint someone who is already firmly embodied at the club.

While Liverpool might have also confirmed that assistant coach Pep Lijnders will be following Klopp in leaving the club this summer, the 41-year-old still finds himself tipped as a leading contender to replace his boss as the new man in charge.

Spending a decade at Anfield and rising through the ranks on Merseyside, Lijnders first arrived at Liverpool and spent 12 months at the Academy before becoming Brendan Rodgers’ No 2 in 2015.

Continuing to flourish under Klopp’s guidance and now firmly recognised as the deputy at Anfield, there has been plenty of speculation that the 41-year-old is the Reds’ next manager-in-waiting.

Although Lijnders might have failed to make much of an impact during a brief six-month stint back at his native NEC Nijmegen in 2018, the Dutch coach would also prove to be a financially shrewd appointment.
