2021 Royal Ascot Day 3 Tips for Thursday 17th June
Day 3 of the 2021 Royal Ascot features the big race of the week, the Ascot Gold Cup, where Stradavarius will be looking to equal Yeats’ record of four wins in the race. See Henry’s betting tips below.

2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener on Gold Cup day is the Norfolk Stakes over 5f. Yet again, Wesley Ward has one of the market leaders in Lucci but the 4/1 mark shows it is a wide open renewal of the race.
The one I like is INSTINCTIVE MOVE EW (10/1) for the Clive Cox team. I was really taken by her debut victory at Bath where he quickened up in impressive fashion to win going away. I think he will improve for that effort and Clive Cox has a good record with his 2 year-olds at this track. He knows what it takes and I think this horse can run a big race for us.
3:05 Royal Ascot
The 3:05 race is the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes over the 1m2f trip. Mohaafeth bids to pick up compensation after being a late withdrawal on Derby Day for the big one. He has an obvious chance here but the price isn’t very appealing.
I’ll go with ROMAN EMPIRE EW (15/2) here. He was 4th in the Dante and at one point he looked like he might have stole that from the front. He did go off quick that day and I expect similar tactics today. However, I don’t think he will have to go off as fast today and with not much pace in the line-up, Ryan Moore could set steady fractions and kick on in the straight. Solid E/W bet.
3:40 Royal Ascot
The 3:40 race is the Ribblesdale Stakes for the fillies, a Group 2 race over 1m4f and it’s always one of my favourite races of the week.
The one I like today is ESHAADA NAP (11/2). This unbeaten filly made it 2 from 2 last time out at Newbury in what looked a decent little race. That was over 1m2f and she was doing all her best work at the end there so this step up in trip looks a positive. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet and I think she can improve past the others.
We always advise getting a free bet for these big meetings because the bookies offers are more generous than ever, and that is certainly the case with this Mr Play bet £10 get £15 sign-up offer.
4:15 Royal Ascot
The Ascot Gold Cup comes up at 4:15 and Stradivarius bids to make history and win this for the 4th year on the run. He has a great chance of course, but at odds on it’s a no from me I’m afraid.
The one I like is TRUESHAN EW (6/1). The forecast rain will be a huge benefit to this horse and it’s hard to forget his mighty effort on Champion’s Day here at Ascot last October. The extra distance will be no problem and he made an encouraging reappearance effort behind Japan at Chester. That will put him spot on for this and get on before the rain hopefully arrives.
5:00 Royal Ascot
The 5:00 race is the Britannia Stakes which is an ultra competitive handicap over the straight mile.
The one for me is AIR TO AIR NB (17/2). He was very impressive when making it back to back victories last time at Doncaster where he won as easy as you like. He’s up 8lb today but I don’t think that will stop him from going very close here. The master of this course and distance Jamie Spencer takes the rides and hopefully he can deliver Air to Air late to win this for us.
5:35 Royal Ascot
The 5:35 race is the King George V Stakes over the round course. It is a 1m4f contest and the market leader is currently 5/1 which shows it’s another competitive handicap for punters to get stuck into.
The one for me is KONDO ISAMI EW (14/1). Trained by Mark Johnston who has a cracking record in this race winning it a total of six times. This horse was unlucky next time out in his bid to make it 2-2 on the season and I think he still has a race in him off the current mark of 90. He’s a consistent sort who will likely set the pace and won’t have to worry about hard luck stories which there is sure to be a few of.
6:10 Royal Ascot
The finale on Day 3 is the Buckingham Palace Stakes, a race over 7f. The rain will have likely arrived and the ground will be on the tacky side by now I’d think.
Therefore, the one for me is ALDAARY (6/1) who will be well suited by a slower surface. He returned to action this season with a fantastic victory over this course and distance here at Ascot pulling clear to win by over 3l. He was a disappointing third last time out but had excuses there and I expect him to bounce back under ideal conditions.
