Cheltenham Festival Each-Way Yankee Tips – Four Double Figure Prices for an Each-Way Bet
Unsurprisingly, in search of big prices we’ve concentrated on the infamously baffling handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival for these four selections in an each-way tip.
Obviously, identifying horses likely to run well is more challenging than in conditions races, such as the Champion Hurdle or the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but the nature of handicaps increases the likelihood of a big-priced winner, in the first place, and introduces the possibility of enhanced place terms.
Coral Cup – Thomas Darby
The first horse that catches our eye is Thomas Darby (20/1) in the Coral Cup on Wednesday. Olly Murphy’s consistent 8-year-old is only 4lb higher in the weights than when giving 7lb and a 1-length beating to Song For Someone in a handicap hurdle at Ascot in January, 2020 and, most recently, was a rallying third in the re-arranged Grade Two Relkeel Hurdle at Kempton. That was his first attempt beyond 2 miles 4 furlongs and, with this stiffer test of stamina likely to play to his strengths, he has bright prospects of adding to his winning tally.
Pertemps Network Final – Third Wind
Next up is Third Wind (20/1) in the Pertemps Network Final on Thursday. The 7-year-old Shirocco gelding is actually 12lb higher in the weights than when finishing fourth in the same race last year, but took his form to a new level when beating last year’s Stayers’ Hurdle winner, Lisnagar Oscar, who was receiving 4lb, in the Grade Two Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock in February. He has a decent strike rate, having won five of his ten starts over hurdles and finished outside the places just twice, including in the Grade One Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. He should give us a good run for our money.
Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup – Demachine
Later the same afternoon, we like the look of Demachine (20/1) in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup. Although still a novice, he has jumped around Ascot (twice) and Newbury without major incident, so the stiffness of the Prestbury Park fences need not be a worry. Indeed, he is bred to be a top-class staying chaser, being by Flemensfirth out of a Milan mare and, although beaten in the Grade Two Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase at Ascot, on his return to action following wind surgery, he has time on his side. With significant improvement on the cards, he makes no little appeal at seemingly generous odds.
County Handicap Hurdle – Petite Mouchoir
In the County Handicap Hurdle on Friday, Petite Mouchoir (33/1) has been a regular visitor to Cheltenham in recent years, running, without success, in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the Champion Hurdle (twice), the Arkle Challenge Trophy and the Stayers’ Hurdle at five consecutive Festivals. The last time he ran in a handicap, though, in the valuable Guinness Galway Hurdle last summer, he finished a close third, beaten 4 lengths, off today’s handicap mark. Now back with his original trainer, Gordon Elliott, who has an exemplary record in Festival handicaps, he looks worthy of inclusion.
