ITV Racing Tips from Doncaster’ St Leger Festival (Thursday 9th September)

The ITV coverage of the 2021 St Leger festival gets underway on Thursday 9th September and Henry has gone through the races and picked his tips.

There is also one race from Epsom being shown live on ITV3, due off at 2.55pm and it’s the jump jockey’s derby, where the best jump jockeys switch codes for a special race across the Epsom derby course.

1:40 Doncaster 

The first race on ITV is a tricky 6f nursery handicap for the fillies where the current market leader is around the 4/1 marker which suggests it’s a wide open contest.

The one I’ve landed on here is SUMMERS DAY (9/2). Godolphin landed the opener yesterday here at Doncaster and I think they can do it again today. Summers Day has progressed with every run and he won easily last time out at Brighton to get off the mark. I think he’ll continue to improve with each outing and hopefully he can go close for us in a tricky opener.

 

2:10 Doncaster

The 2:10 race is another wide open contest over the 6f trip, this time it is the turn of the 2 year-olds.

My selection is JAZZ CLUB (11/2). He is another who has gradually improved with each run and also managed to win on his third career start last time out at Windsor. Ryan Moore takes the reigns and the Roger Varian stable have took this contest twice in the last four years so they know what it takes to win it. I also think the fitting of headgear will help him settle better and concentrate. Good chance.

 

2:40 Doncaster

The 2:40 race is the May Hill Stakes, a Group 2 for the 2 year-old fillies over the mile distance. Inspiral is a very short priced favourite and it’s easy to see why given the strong connections and the two impressive wins to start her career.

However, I’ll take her on each way here with PROSPEROUS VOYAGE EW (7/1). Here we have another filly who’s improving with each run and I’m hoping she can put her experience to good use here today. She caught the eye last time out at Goodwood over 7f staying on strongly doing all her best work at the end of the contest. That race will work out well I think and this step up to the mile could certainly bring out further improvement. I’d be surprised if she didn’t hit the frame at least here.

 

2:55 Epsom

The 2:55 at Epsom is a very unique race. It is the Jump Jockeys Derby over 1m4f and it’ll be a different experience for the jockeys than 3m round Cheltenham on soft ground that’s for sure!

The one for me is EDINBURGH CASTLE (5/1). A horse that’s been running well over hurdles recently, he now returns to the flat off what certainly looks a competitive mark. Trainer Jonjo O’Neill is banging in the winners recently and Tom Scudamore has experience in similar races which can only help his chances.

 

3:15 Doncaster

Back to Doncaster for the 3:15 race and it is a Park Hill Fillies Stakes, another Group 2 but this time over 1m6f.

My selection is FREE WIND NB (9/4). A filly who is progressing well and just the type trainer John Gosden excels with. She put up a career best in Group 3 company last time out over in France and given that was only her fifth career start, it’s likely we haven’t seen the best of her yet and she’ll continue to improve. I think she’ll appreciate the quick ground again and I expect her to prove tough to beat today.

 

3:45 Doncaster 

The 3:45 race ends proceedings on ITV and it is a 7f handicap.

My selection is MOTAWAAJED NAP (11/4). A winner on his last two starts things seem to have clicked and I don’t think a 2lb rise for that easy win last time out over this course and distance will be enough to stop him from completing the hat-trick today.
