Horse Racing Tips: Four Selections to Consider on Thursday

Storm Barra, which swept in across the Atlantic on Tuesday morning, may yet have a say in Thursday’s racing, but competitive meetings are scheduled for Newcastle, Taunton, Warwick and Chelmsford.

We’ve unearthed four selections that, we believe, will give us a run for our money whatever the weather.

Pay The Piper is admirably consistent and his close second to subsequent Ladbrokes Trophy runner-up Fiddlerontheroof, who was conceding 6lb, at Carlisle on his penultimate start makes compelling reading in the context of this race. He subsequently proved no match for impressive winner Bravemansgame at Haydock last month, but this looks an easier assignment and the handicapper has kindly dropped him 1lb in the weights.

Taunton: 2:40 Dave Criddle Travel And Classic Holidays Handicap Hurdle 2m3f

Guernsey was beaten favourite in a similar race over course and distance a fortnight ago, but only went down by two necks behind the prolific An Tailliur and Dargiannini and can make amends. He has been raised 2lb in the weights for his latest effort, but remains lightly raced for a 5-year-old and may yet have more to offer. He appears to act on just about any going.

Warwick: 2:00 Actioncoach Invest In The Best Lady Godiva Mares’ Novices’ Chase 2m4f

Little River Bay won on soft and heavy going over hurdles, but is 2-2 over fences on good and good to soft going, so can probably be relied upon to run her race unless the West Midlands course turns into a quagmire. She steps up in class after winning small-field mares’ novices’ chases at Worcester and Uttoxeter, but is the joint highest-rated of these and remains open to further progress.

Chelmsford: 5:30 Betsi Handicap 1m

You’re Hired may be an 8-year-old, but nevertheless produced a career-best effort over course and distance last month and warrants close inspection off a handicap mark just 2lb higher. He only won narrowly, but is attempting little more than he achieved last time, notwithstanding the presence of former Middle Park winner Last Lion, and looks a decent bet to follow up.
