1:50 Cheltenham

The 1:50 race from HQ is the opener on ITV and it is the Racing Post Gold Cup Handicap Chase over 2m4f.

My selection is DOSTAL PHIL EW (15/2). He was 4th here behind Midnight Shadow last month beating 3l and I think he can reverse that form here on better terms. He was doing all his best work at the end of the race that day and was closest at the line. I think the pace will be even stronger here today and with the ground slightly softer, I’m confident he can go past the lot of them today.

2:05 Doncaster

The 2:05 from Doncaster is a handicap hurdle over 2m.

The one I like in this is NATURAL HISTORY EW (9/1). He’s a horse will serious potential but has never quite fulfilled that potential. He was well backed last time out at Fontwell but seem to get stuck in the ground there and was pulled up to avoid a horse race. This isn’t the deepest renewal and he’s worth a go at the generous prices available.

2:25 Cheltenham

The 2:25 from Cheltenham is an Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdles over 3m. There is a chance a couple of these could return for the March contest.

I expect BLAZING KHAL NB (Evens) to win this. He was very impressive when winning here at Cheltenham over 2m5f last time out where Gelino Bello finished second a couple of lengths behind. I think the 3m trip here will suit Blazing Khal more so I don’t see how that form will be reversed here. The others would have to step up significantly to beat the front two in the market.

2:40 Doncaster

The 2:40 from Doncaster is the Summit Juvenile Hurdle, a Grade 2 contest over 2 miles.

The one I like in this is PORTICELLO NAP (6/4) for the Moore team. The Moore team have always had a great record with their juveniles and this lad looked a useful prospect when winning well on debut for the yard at Wetherby in October. He was a winner on soft ground in France back in April so the ground should hold no fears.

3:00 Cheltenham

The 3:00 race from Cheltenham is the International Hurdle, another Grade 2 race over an extended 2m. It’s a race that probably shows the lack of depth in the English Champion Hurdle squad.

The one for me here is WILDE ABOUT OSCAR EW (16/1). He travelled well on seasonal debut at Aintree over 2m4f but it looked like he didn’t quite see the trip out. He drops back to 2m here and I think that’s a good move. This 6 year-old rattled off a hat-trick last season and I think he’s capable of further progress this season. The 16/1 in places at the time of writing like really big to me.

3:15 Doncaster

The last race from Doncaster comes up at 3:15 and it is a handicap chase over the 3m trip.

My selection is TWO FOR GOLD (5/2). The Kim Bailey team are in rude form and I expect Two For Gold to set the pace here and prove difficult to pass. He jumps for fun and certainly doesn’t shark away from a battle. He’s competed in better races than this and I think he’ll be able to defy top weight here.

3:35 Cheltenham

The finale from ITV is a trappy mares handicap hurdle over the intermediate trip of 2m4f.

The one I’ve landed on is TRAPISTA (4/1). I like the unexposed angle here as I don’t think there is an awful lot of quality in this race. She looked exciting when winning last time out at Huntingdon and I’m confident she can remain unbeaten here. A long way to go but she reminded me of stable star More Of That and how his career path started. I’ll chance her win only here.
