Horse Racing Tips: Three Nap Selections for Catterick, Wincanton & Newcastle on Tuesday

Tuesday’s racing features an eclectic mix of Jumps action from Catterick and Wincanton and a ‘twilight’ Flat card from Newcastle.

We’ve highlighted our best bets at all three meetings.

Catterick: 1:15 Clare Newnam Novices’ Handicap Chase 2m3f

Balranald failed to win in 15 starts over hurdles, but opened his account over regulation fences at the first time of asking at Sedgefield three weeks ago and may have more to offer. Indeed, he finished strongly to wear down the odds-on favourite on the run-in, having been 4 lengths or more behind with two to jump, so a 5lb rise in the weights may not be enough to prevent him following up.

None of these are entirely convincing, but Young O’Leary won over fences at Taunton last March for Nigel Hawke, albeit off a 5lb lower mark, and made an encouraging debut over hurdles for new trainer Tim Vaughan on the same course last month. Dropping back in distance on a galloping course should do his chances no harm and he remains open to improvement.

Newcastle: 6:00 MansionBet Beaten By A Head Handicap 7f

Spartan Fighter came up short on his hat-trick attempt in a 0-75 contest over course and distance last Saturday, but conditions are clearly keen to try again while the iron is hot and the hint may be worth taking. He steps back up in class, but won over 6 furlongs in this grade, off today’s mark, last January, so is far from a forlorn hope.
