Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips from Doncaster, Kelso and Kempton (26/03/22)
1:15 Doncaster
The flat season is here and it’s a 2 year-old 5f sprint to kick us off at Doncaster.
My selection here is PERSIAN FORCE (Evens) NB. A son of Mehmas, a sire that has a tremendous record with 2 year olds should take the world of beating here on pedigree. A half brother to Windsor Castle winner Gubbass who also won on debut, he can be expected to make a winning start to for Richard Hannon who as we know excels with his 2 year-old crop every year.
1:35 Kelso
The 1:35 from Kelso is a trappy handicap hurdle over the 2m4f distance.
The one for me is ROMEO BROWN EW (17/2) for the Sue Smith stable. He ran a good race last time out at Carlisle finishing second behind a solid yardstick in Better Getalong. They pulled slightly clear of the third and he now returns to Kelso where he has ran well before. Solid each-way selection.
1:50 Doncaster
The Cammidge Trophy Stakes is next up, a listed contest over the 6f trip.
The horse I like is DILIGENT HARRY (2/1) NAP. I’d say he is certainly the least exposed in the line-up and I think he’s entitled to improve now at the age of 4. He’s the type of horse trainer Clive Cox does well with. He won on AW Chanpionships day last season before going close in a Group 3 so he’s well up to running at this level. I expect a bold bid.
2:05 Kempton
The 2:05 at Kempton is the Magnolia Stakes, a listed race over just shy of 1m2f.
My selection is FELIX (11/4). He ran at Group 1 level last month over at Meydan where he ran a very solid race finishing fifth. This is obviously a significant drop in grade and hopefully that effort last time out has put him spot on for this. The race should be run to suit and he’ll be staying on well.
2:25 Doncaster
The 2:25 race is the competitive Spring Mile Handicap.
The one I’ve landed on is A BOY NAMED IVY (6/1). A fairly solid and consistent sort who really runs a bad race. He has a good and busy campaign last season where he always seemed to hit the frame. A decent break will have done him good I think and he returns this season off the same mark he won his seasonal debut off last season.
2:40 Kempton
The 2:40 race is a race for the flat stayers, a 2m handicap race.
The horse I like here is MOLIWOOD (11/2). A horse named after the great Ryder Cup duo of Tommy Fleetwood and Fransesco Molinari, hopefully he can perform better than they have recently. I like his hold up style for a race like this as I think they’ll go fast and Kempton is a track well suited for hold up horses anyway in my opinion. He stayed on strongly to win at here last time out over this trip and I think there is scope for further improvement still. Good price.
3:00 Doncaster
Next up from Doncaster is the Doncaster Mile where only four runners look set to go to post.
I think CHINDIT (4/6) will win this. This is a massive drop in grade for him based on his efforts last season at Group 1 level. He only has three rivals so there shouldn’t be any hard luck stories. I’m guessing this is a confidence booster for him before taken over bigger targets over the summer months.
3:15 Kelso
The 3:15 from Kelso is a competitive 2m mares novice handicap hurdle.
The one for me here is BETTY BALOO (10/1). A winner for us last time out I see no reason why he can’t go close again today. He won well enough last time out staying on strongly over this 2m trip, and with the strong pace angles in the line-up today, I think being a strong stayer at 2m will prove no harm. He’s only up 2lb for that win too.
3:35 Doncaster
The feature race of the day ends proceedings and it’s the Lincoln Handicap over the straight mile at Doncaster.
The one for me in here is MUJTABA (7/2) from the William Haggas team. You need to be a Group horse in a handicap to take this contest recently and this lad looks to be heading that way. He’s unbeaten in three career starts and I was impressed with the guts he shown to defy inexperience on the last of them three starts. He’s drawn low which I think is the place to be here and he has to go close I feel.
