Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips from Haydock, Goodwood, York & the Irish 2000 Guineas
There is a bumper Saturday afternoon of action live on ITV Racing this weekend including the Irish 2000 Guineas from the Curragh and racing from York, Goodwood and Haydock in England.
Henry has been through all of the races and picked his best betting tip for each, including an each-way shout in the Irish classic.
1:25 Haydock
The opener on this bonanza day is the Cazoo Florida Handicap over 1m4f.
I’ll chance SCREAMING PETRUS (5/1) EW here. He showed plenty of promise on his first three starts with a third, second, and a win. He then went into a very competitive handicap at Ascot finishing mid-division. He ran keen there but I think there’s plenty of pace on here and hopefully, he’ll settle better with that experience under his belt. This race isn’t as deep at that contest here and I like the booking of Rossa Ryan who’s a top jockey.
1:45 Goodwood
The first race live from Goodwood comes up at 1:45 and it is the Harroways Handicap over 7f.
I like MY DUBAWI (14/1) EW here for the Mark Johnston team. The yard excels here at Goodwood and this represents a drop in class for My Dubawi who ran in a deep race at Newcastle on AW Finals Day. He has a nice draw in stall 6 and he’s the likely pace angle here. He’s not scared to get his head in front and Goodwood is full of hard-luck stories in behind so being the likely pace angle is no negative.
2:00 Haydock
The 2:00 from Haydock is the Hell Nook Handicap for the stayers over 2m.
The one for me is VALLEY FORGE (6/1) EW. A winner of the competitive Melrose Handicap last season I think he can have another big season. He definitely needed it at Newmarket last time out where he was slowly away and didn’t really handle the dip. He did stay on well to the line and I think that will have brought him on a lot. He was definitely ring rusty and this flatter track is sure to suit more.
2:15 Goodwood
The 2:15 from Goodwood is the Festival Stakes, a listed race over 1m2f.
I’m sticking with the Johnston front runner theme here with WEST END CHARMER (13/2) EW. Similar reasons to the earlier race from Goodwood. He’s the likely pace angle here as I think they’ll try something different with Majestic Dawn. He’s a consistent sort and if Norton can set the fractions right, he may prove tough to pass. Should hopefully hit the frame at least anyway.
2:35 Haydock
Next up we head back to Haydock for the 2:35 and it is the Silver Bowl Handicap over the mile trip.
I think MIGHTY ULYSSES (13/8) NAP will win this. I think she’s a Group horse in a handicap and the fact she still holds an entry in the Group 1 St James Palace Stakes is telling. She didn’t handle Epsom two starts back and I’m sure she will have learned a lot from that outing. She then won a decent race last time out at Newmarket to back that up and she can continue to improve here. De La Sayette claims a useful 5lb as well.
2:55 York
We head to York next, the 2:55 being a wide open 5f sprint handicap.
I’ll chance ZARGUN (12/1) EW here for the Scott Dixon yard. He ran in a decent race last time out here at York finishing 6th behind his stablemate Fine Wine. He kept on well there and Dixon is very good with his sprinters and often gets improvement out of them. I think he’s well-drawn and John Fisher claims a useful 5lb to aid his cause.
3:10 Haydock
The 3:10 is a competitive renewal of the Sandy Lane Stakes, a Group 2 contest over 6f.
I like FLAMING RIB (5/1) EW here for the Hugo Palmer team. A winner on 5 of her last 6 starts, you can’t draw a line through her only defeat as that came over the mile and she didn’t stay. She is a progressive sprinter who beat the elders last time out at Chester which is impressive. The 6f is her ideal trip in my opinion and I believe James Doyle is a great jockey booking. Tough to keep out the frame.
3:20 Curragh
The feature of todays coverage, the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas over the mile.m
The selection for me here is IMPERIAL FIGHTER (25/1) EW. He had strong form as a 2 year-old which included a 2L defeat behind Coroebus which obviously reads well now. He’s made a seasonal reappearance which was an unlucky third at Newcastle but I’d be hopeful he can improve for that outing now. I don’t think much of the home challenge so I think he could chase the favourite him at a decent each-way price.
3:30 York
The 3:30 from York is the Bronte Cup Fillies Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1m6f.
The one for me is SILENCE PLEASE (7/2) NB. Well-backed on her stable debut last time out at Goodwood, she travelled into the race very strongly before finishing tamely. Like most of Balding’s horses, I expect her to come on for that run and go close here with that run under her belt. She’s unexposed over this trip and I think she can improve past this lot.
3:45 Haydock
We finish with the Temple Stake, another Group 2, this time over 5f.
My selection is ARECIBO (22/1) EW. Trainer Robert Cowell excels with his sprinters and Arecibo is a horse full of talent that deserves to land one of these. The faster they go, the better for him and they certainly won’t hang about here. He finished 7th on seasonal return at Newmarket but it was stated he’d improve for that run. If he does, I can see this track and the way this race will be run suiting him perfectly and hopefully he can stay on strongly. He’ll be one of the last off the bridle I think.
