Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips for Newmarket, York and Ascot

This weekend’s ITV Racing tips come from the final day of the Newmarket July Festival, featuring the July Cup, as well as three races from York and a further two from Ascot.

That’s a total of 10 lives races and Henry has previewed each of them below, with a recommended bet in each contest.

1:45 York

First up, we have a 7f handicap over at York.

The selection here is BLUE FOR YOU (11/2). He improved for his second run since the switch to David O’Meara when finishing third at Sandown last time out and showing signs of promise. That was a big step forward from his first run where he was well beaten in 7th over at Beverley. In typical, O’Meara fashion I think he’ll continue to get further improvement out of him as the season progresses and I expect him to be ready to win races off this current mark. The trainer reaches for the visor which can squeeze out further improvement and I get the impression that means connections mean business today.

 

2:05 Newmarket

The first race from HQ is also a 7f handicap.

I expect KIDWAH (13/8) to win this. She makes her handicap debut after two wins to start her career and she obviously has scope to progress. Haggas has been cleaning up similar handicaps throughout the season and I don’t think she has much to beat truth be told.

 

2:20 York

The Silver Cup Stakes is next, a Group 3 over 1m6f.

A poor 3 runner race. I think THUNDEROUS (7/4) might just steal this from the front. He’ll get a soft lead and he ran a cracker here from the front in the Yorkshire Cup finishing a clear second to Stradivarius. A repeat of that will be enough today.

 

2:40 Newmarket

The 2:40 race is the bet365 mile handicap.

I’ll chance BE LUCKY MY SON (10/1) EW here. He caught the eye at Sandown when finishing 4th in a competitive enough handicap staying on well. He’s followed that up with two decent victories and arrives here on a hat-trick with the stable in better form. He receives weight all round and off 8’2 I think he can go very close.

 

3:00 Ascot

The first of two races from Ascot comes up at 3:00 and it is a wide open 5f handicap.

I’ll chance top weight ZARZYNI (9/1) EW here who will relish this type of race. A 5f sprint rat Ascot with plenty of pace on looks perfect. He ran a career best when 4th behind Khaadem beaten a length closing all the way to the line at Group 3 level. He returns to handicap company today and jockey Laura Pearson takes off a valuable 3lb. I can’t see him out the frame with a clear run.

 

3:15 Newmarket

The next race comes from Newmarket and it the the Superlative Stake, a Group 2 over 7f.

Hard to be confident as they are all full of promise and we don’t have much form to go on. However, I was really taken with LION OF WAR (15/8) last time out when powering clear to win by 10L at Newcastle. We’ve seen plenty of promising sorts run well at Newcastle at the start of their career and hopefully this is another one. Bred in the purple, he can keep improving and prove tough to pass today.

 

3:35 Ascot

The 3:35 from Ascot is the Summer smile of Group 2 class.

I’m happy to chance PEROTTO (11/1) EW here. After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, he definitely needed his reappearance effort. However, he showed promising signs that the ability remains last time out at Windsor. He went from the front there and despite getting squeezed out of these 1F, he came back for more staying on to the line. Again, I think he can come on for that effort and in a race where nothing excites me, I’m happy to change an outsider.

 

3:50 Newmarket

The competitive Bunbury Cup is next on the agenda, ran over 7f.

I really like SAMBURU (4/1) NAP here. Strongly fancied in the Jersey Stakes, he could only manage sixth that day but that was still a very pleasing effort given his inexperience. A winner of all three starts before that, with that handicap experience under his belt, I think he’ll win this. Drawn in stall 7 looks spot on and the Gosden team are flying now which wasn’t the case at Royal Ascot.

 

4:05 York

The competitive John Smith Cup is next up, a competitive handicap over 1m2f.

I’ll chance LA TRINIDAD (12/1) EW here. A horse that is a regular in these type of races, he appears to be coming to the boil nicely for this contest. He has a fantastic record here at York to boot and the conditions look ideal. Stall 4 looks good too.

 

4:25 Newmarket 

The feature of the day comes up at 4:25, the Group 1 Darley July Stakes over 6f.

The selection here is TWILIGHT JET (18/1) EW. I think being at the front here will prove beneficial given the ground is lightening fast. I don’t think they’ll be stopping. Draw a line through his last effort as he scoped badly after it. His 2 year-old form is really good and his comeback effort this season showed up all the ability is still there. Stall 3 is the place to be given low numbers have looked to have an advantage all week and he’ll do for me here at a nice each-way price.

 

4:40 York

The finale is the City Walls Stakes, a listed contest over 5f.

I’ll go with WINTER POWER (5/2) NB here who is well suited by 5f at York on quick ground. She is all pace and they may not see what was she goes if on a going day. Obviously, she’s very in and out but I think the price is fair back at listed level.
