ITV Racing Tips for King George Day at Ascot and York

This Saturday’s ITV Racing tips come from York and Ascot, where the King George VI is the big race of the day as Westover and Emily Upjohn clash. 

The action gets underway at 1.50pm and there are a total of seven races to get through including four from Ascot. Henry has been through the cards and picked his best bet for each race.

1:50 Ascot

The opener on ITV is the Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes, a Group 3 for the 2 year-old fillies over 6f.

Lezoo sets a high standard but at the prices, I’d much prefer to play GLENLAUREL (5/1). I was really impressed with her victory on her debut at Thirsk, she traveled with ease and picked up in taken fashion to win going away at Thirsk. She looked a real top-notch filly there and it has to be of interest that connections have her entered for the Lowther Stakes. She obviously has scope to improve again given the fact she’s only had one start and I’m happy to chance her here.

 

2:05 York

The first race from York is the unique Jumps Jockeys Nunthorpe over the minimum 5f trip.

I’ll chance LEODIS DREAM (12/1) EW here. Given the fact it’s jump jockeys, I want to be on a horse that just jumps and goes from the front. The selection does just that and Sam Twiston-Davies has to be an encouraging jockey booking I guess given his level of ability over the jumps. Trainer Paul Midgley has won two renewals of this race from the four we’ve had so that has to be a positive. Hard to be confident but he’ll do for me.

 

2:25 Ascot

The 2:25 race from Ascot is the Valiant Stakes, a Group 3 for fillies and mares over the round mile.

The price isn’t great but I expect ZANBAQ (11/8) to win this. She was runner-up in the very competitive Sandringham handicap for 3 year-olds at the Royal Meeting and she continues to improve for each outing. She likes to be held up so stall 1 shouldn’t be an issue as long as Crowley doesn’t attempt to go up the rail. There is plenty of pace on in here which will suit and I think she’ll win this before moving onto bigger targets later in the season.

 

2:40 York

The 2:40 is a competitive handicap, the Sky Bet Dash Handicap over 6f.

I’ve landed on VENTUROUS (9/1) EW here. A fast run 6f at York looks right up his straight of on a going day. He was slowly away last time out at Ascot and finished strongly to be beaten just over 2l in a similar race. I think this race will suit the horses held up which is where he will be. Oisin Orr has been riding well recently and he tends to ride the horse held up well from what I’ve seen of him recently. I think he’ll be able to weave a passage through and I expect this horse to his the frame at the very least.

 

3:00 Ascot

The 3:00 race is your typical wide-open Ascot handicap over 7f on the straight course.

I like ARATUS (7/1) EW here. Things haven’t gone to plan this season but he looked a potential Group performer last season. I think this drop back to 7f is going to prove ideal as he tends to take a keen hold. Clive Cox has hit form recently and he has a fantastic record in these straight course handicaps at Ascot. Tom Marquand has to be considered a great jockey booking too.

 

3:15 York

The last race from York on ITV is 3:15 and it is the Sky Bet York Stakes, a Group 2 over 1m2f.

It’s DUBAI FUTURE (11/8) NAP for me here. I was very taken by his victory at Royal Ascot in a competitive handicap. That was a big step forward and similar to Real World for the same connections, hopefully he can kick on now and become a Group level horse after winning a decent Royal Ascot handicap. He hasn’t raced much over here in the UK as he spent a lot of time in Dubai running at a decent level. However, last time out was definitely a big step forward and I’m very hopeful things have started to click now for the 6 year-old. Claymore is a vulnerable favourite for me who could set it up for the selection.

 

3:35 Ascot 

The finale of the coverage on ITV is the feature, the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes over 1m4f.

I like MISHRIFF (7/2) NB here for the Gosden team. Very unlucky after a decent break last time out in the Group 1 Coral Eclipse where he failed narrowly despite suffering problems in running. That was over 1m2f and this is 2f longer but I’ve got a feeling they may go slow. The only pace angle is BROOME who is often slowly away which may make this a little tactical. Mishriff is a proven Group 1 performer in open class and the 3 year-olds have got to improve in my opinion to reach that level.

I would advise a small win single on BROOME too at a big price. If he gets away on terms, he could make this a real test like he did last time out. There’s no jockey better from the front than Ryan Moore.
