DONCASTER & EPSOM TIPS – Preview and Bets for Thursday’s ITV Racing on St Leger Week

ITV Racing tips for Thursday’s action at Doncaster and a bonus race from Epsom as we head towards the final classic of the season, the St Leger. Henry has been through all six of the live races and picked his best bet for each.

1:25 Doncaster 

The first race is a trappy fillies nursery handicap over 6f.

I like MISTY BLUES (6/1) in the opener. She ran a cracker last time out at York in a decent race at a big price where she stayed on strongly to finish a never nearer 2nd. She was a good winner two starts prior to that at Pontefract in a race that has since worked out well and I’m hoping she can put her experience to use in a race of this nature. She deserves to get her head back in front and any rain that falls shouldn’t be an issue.

 

2:00 Doncaster 

The 2:00 race is another for the 2 year-olds again over the 6f trip.

I like COLD CASE (11/4) here. He has improved with each outing this season and last time out, he ran a cracker in a competitive renewal of the Gimcrack Stakes at York where he finished a good third. I think he can come forward again as he’s still learning on the job but that run last time out would have certainly helped. Karl Burke who trains the selection has a strong bunch of 2 year-olds this season and I find it hard to see him beaten in this.

 

2:15 Epsom 

We have one race from Epsom during the coverage on ITV and it is the unique Jump Jockeys Derby over the Derby course and distance of 1m4f.

It’s hard to be confident given the jockey situation but THIBAUT (5/1) ran here last time out last month. He’ll have learnt a fair chunk from that course experience and he was by no means disgraced in finishing second. I’m sure that effort had this race in mind. The early market vibes are encouraging and he’ll do for me.

 

2:35 Doncaster 

We have Group 2 action up next and it is the May Hill Stakes, a 2 year-old fillies race over the mile.

I think DANCE IN THE GRASS (5/4) NAP will hose in here. I think she’s a real star of a 2 year-old filly. She’s only had two career runs, both coming at Sandown but she’s won both of them in taken fashion. She was a listed winner at Sandown last time out where she came from off the pace to win comfortably. That effort was over 7f but I think the mile trip here may even bring out further improvement. She has scope to continue improving and she looks the part.

 

3:10 Doncaster 

The older horses strut their stuff at 3:10 in another Group 2 race, this time it is the Park Hill Fillies Stakes over 1m6f.

I do think the rank outsider NELL QUICKLY (33/1) EW is overpriced here. She was a star last season completing a hat-trick on her final three starts of 2021. Things haven’t quite gone to plan this season but I think it’s too soon to write her off. She’s a gutsy filly who finds plenty for pressure and if she comes back to form I think she has a right chance. The 1m6f trip should hold no fears and she did thrive at this time last season so I’m hoping that can be the case again. She comes here fresher than most with this only being her third start of the campaign.

 

3:45 Doncaster 

The last race from Doncaster on ITV is a tricky 7f handicap.

It’s BILLYB (10/1) EW for me here. I liked him the last day over at Thirsk where he was well backed throughout the day and he duly backed that up by running a cracker finishing second. He stayed on right through the line there and was unlucky not to get up close to home. That gave me the impression this return to the Doncaster 7f trip will prove ideal for him given he’s a course and distance winner. He just looks a solid each-way bet in a race of this nature.
