Grand National 2023 Each-way Tips – 20/1 and 50/1 Outsiders to bet on in the Grand National

Which of the Grand National outsiders are the best ones to bet on for an each-way bet? We asked OB to look through the bigger odds horses running in the 2023 Grand National and he’s picked out two each-way betting tips.

Noble Yeats won the race last year at odds of 50/1 and it doesn’t happen as often as in the past, big odds horses do still win the race and even as an each-way bet, you will still get a decent return if your horse finishes in the places.

OB has looked at the best 5 each-way bets for the 2023 Grand National and picked out the two best to have a bet on.

 

Le Milos (16/1 with bet365)

• bet365 are paying 6 places in the Grand National.

Le Milos has been rewarded for a change in trainer this season and in doing so landed the much sort-after handicap win in the Coral Trophy (The old Hennessy) for the Skelton team. This race has been the plan ever since that win at the end of November. His run last time out at Kelso can be forgotten about as he got very tired up the run in and ended up being reeled in by Empire Steel. Trainer Dan Skelton has since said that the horse wasn’t fit that day and that the race was just a prep for this.

The Coral Trophy is a proper test of stamina over 3m2f and you need to stay to win even in good/fast ground that it was for this year’s renewal. Le Milos has won on good and heavy ground so he’s one that isn’t worrying about the forecast and what ground we may get on Saturday. I think there’s a lot of improvement to come for this horse and he’s a fair EW price and one I can see having plenty of support over these next few days.

 

Galvin (20/1 with bet365)

• bet365 are paying 6 places in the Grand National.

A Grade 1 animal that has seen career highlights come in the shape of a Savills Chase win and a 4^th in the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He has since disappointed in 2 G1s In November at Down Royal and at Xmas at Punchestown and that led Gordon to dropping him down in grade and target him at the Cross Country at Cheltenham.

He seemed to take to the banks well and that coincided with him finishing a very good 2^nd to Delta Work on ground he wouldn’t have loved. Still only 9, Galvin is far from finished at graded level and although maybe his best performances are behind him, he still has a lot to offer and races to win. Due to his high rating, he comes here with a lot of weight to carry and makes this extremely difficult to win. Although a very capable horse I believe the weight is a big barrier to him winning this. But with good ground and a bit of luck in running, I think Galvin can run his race and finish within the places.

 

Aint That A Shame (22/1 with William Hill)

• William Hill are paying 6 places in the Grand National.

Trained by Henry De Bromhead and ridden by Rachel Blackmore. Two facts that often make punters pile into horses with those connections. The pair teamed up to win the 2021 prize and there’s every chance they can claim this again with Aint That a Shame.

This horse has been placed in two big field handicaps this season when 2^nd (to The Big Dog) in the Munster National in October and 4^th in the Paddy Power Chase at Xmas, both races being 3 miles.

Stamina may still be a doubt with this horse though. The only time he has gone further than 3m was when he was last of 13 finishers in last year’s Kim Muir Chase at Cheltenham (over 3m2f).

Lightly raced 9-year-old with only 7 chase starts to date, Aint That A Shame comes into this still with potential improvement in him and it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw it here. The horse is likely to go off shorter than currently priced due to the Rachel Blackmore factor but this a horse that I’m going to leave alone and just hope that I don’t regret that call.

 

Carefully Selected (33/1 with William Hill)

• William Hill are paying 6 places in the Grand National.

Another horse in the race from Willie Mullins’s Closutton yard who isn’t without a chance. Carefully Selected was a horse with huge potential in his younger days and has a 2^nd place in the Cheltenham Champion bumper along with novice hurdle form with Allaho and Minella Indo on his CV.

He was sent off 10/11 fav for the National Hunt Chase in his novice chase season only to unseat his rider. He was then off the track a mammoth 1022 days before reappearing this season at Xmas. A great training performance from Willie made him a winner next time out in the Thyestes Chase. That was over a 3m1f trip on heavy ground and was a proper staying performance to win that day and would indicate that stamina over a longer distance wouldn’t be a problem.

Even though as an 11-year-old he is lightly raced due to his long break and even though his best years may be behind him, he could still have something big to give in a race like this. Another one I think may shorten up slightly before the day and if the money does come it would give extra confidence.

With the majority of his wins on soft/heavy ground, this may be a horse that is reliant on the wetter surface and with a mixed forecast over the next 4/5 days it’s hard to be confident at this time. If the ground comes up soft then I think he has a great chance and a good EW price. But if the rain stays away then I think the ask becomes much bigger.

 

Dunboyne (50/1 with BetUK)

• BetUK are paying 6 places in the Grand National.

2^nd to Carefully Selected in the Thyestes (as mentioned above) Chase in January, Dunboyne’s next start was the Kim Muir Chase at Cheltenham in which he was quietly fancied in. He was 4^th, beaten 13 ½ lengths in that contest in what looked a hot race. That form was hardly franked from Monday’s Irish National with Stumptown disappointing and Angels Dawn finishing 6^th. That short head defeat to Carefully Selected would suggest this horse is slightly overpriced on the basis of that horse’s price.

Dunboyne has been on the go all season and Cheltenham was his 6th start since October. Having raced on a mix of yielding/soft/heavy and over multiple trips, it’s hard to see where improvement comes from but I’d expect it to come on good ground and a bigger step up in trip. So this race over 4 miles could be just what he wants and he’s one I believe is worth chancing at his huge price. Gordon Elliott has won the race 3 times already and this horse will give him a good spin of making it 4.
