ITV Racing Tips for Day 2 of the Craven Meeting and one Cheltenham Race (Wednesday 19th April)

1:30 Cheltenham 

Before we head to Newmarket, we have one race from Cheltenham and it’s a competitive renewal of the Silver Trophy Handicap Chase, ran over an extended 2m4f.

The one for me here is GEMIRANDE (6/1). He’s been a real improver this season and in five starts, he’s finished no worse than second. He likes to get on with things from the front and this track at Cheltenham on decent ground favours prominent races. If he can get into a nice rhythm early under Charlie Deustch, I think he will go close.

1:50 Newmarket

The first of four races from Newmarket is at 1:50 and it is a 1m handicap.

I like GENTLE WHINNY (12/1) EW here in a competitive race. He improved from each of his first three runs as a 2 year-old winning his final start of the campaign at Windsor. He travelled powerfully into that race staying on strongly through the line. That was over the mile and the way he stayed on that day suggests this stiff finish over the same trip will certainly play to his strengths. Tom Marquand is a very eye-catching jockey booking too.

2:25 Newmarket

Next up from HQ we have another trappy handicap, this time over the 6f trip.

I like ADMIRAL D (11/1) EW here. There appears to be plenty of pace on in this with the likes of Mr Wagyu and Leap Abroad and that will suit Admiral D who likes to be held up. The stiff finish at Newmarket will suit as he tends to finish with a rattle when on a going day. He was a never nearer 9th of 19 last time out at York staying on near the end of the contest and now back to a stiffer test on ground slightly on the slow side, I’d be hopeful he can hit the frame at least with a bit of luck.

3:00 Newmarket 

The 3:00 contest is the Feilden Stakes, a listed contest ran over 1m1f.

A race full of improvers but I quite like CANBERRA LEGEND (8/1) EW. The son of Australia made a really encouraging debut at Newcastle in February when winning comfortably showing a potent turn of foot. He can be expected to come on for that run and a lot of his rivals are coming here for their first run of the campaign. Hopefully he holds a fitness edge. That debut victory was  as good as any debut performance in this field and its easy to see why connections think a lot of him.

3:35 Newmarket

The feature on Day 2 of the Craven Meeting comes up at 3:35 and it is the Group 3 Nell Gwynn Stakes for the fillies over 7f.

I think COPPICE (2/1) NAP will take this. A really impressive debut victory at Kempton in a race that has worked out well with the second going in since. That performance was backed up well on the clock and Gosden’s often improve a lot from their first outing. It doesn’t look the deepest renewal to me and coming from a strong stable who do exceptionally well with their fillies, I think she’ll prove too good.
