1:30 Chester
The opener on Chester Cup day is a wide-open handicap over the 7f trip.
I like BOARDMAN (7/2) here. Drawn in stall 4, he should be able to get a lovely position just behind the leaders. There is plenty of pace on here and judging by the action on Thursday, sitting just off the pace on the rail looks a good spot to be. Boardman is 2 from 6 at the track including a win off a mark of 95. He’s off 97 today and I think he’ll go close.
2:05 Chester
The 2:05 contest is another competitive handicap, this time over 1m2f.
The one for me in this is BARYSHNIKOV (5/1) NAP. A good winner of this contest last season, he’s technically off 3lb lower this time round with Billy Loughnane’s claim taken into consideration. He ran a very encouraging race last time out at Pontefract staying on strongly to finish third. That should put him spot on for today and this will obviously have been the number one aim for a while.
2:40 Chester
Next up is the 2:40 race and it looks like a decent renewal of the Huxley Stakes. A Group 2 contest over the extended 1m2f.
It’s MUJTABA (4/1) NB for me in this. He produced a career best on his latest start powering clear to win by 7L at Newbury back in October. He relished the soft conditions that day so any soft in the going description today will certainly be in his favour. He progressed through the handicap ranks well last season and will have learnt a lot for that. He’s entitled to further improvement this season and he’ll do for me in this.
3:15 Chester
The feature of the week comes up at 3:15, the Chester Cup, a handicap over the extended 2m2f distance.
The one I’ve landed on is VINO VICTRIX (14/1) EW. He was a really progressive stayer last season which resulted in him finishing a fine second in the Cesarewitch. He’s proven over the trip and top claimer Benoit De La Sayette takes off a valuable 3lb. He has had one run this season finishing 8th at Newbury but I’m sure that was to blow away the cobwebs with this race in mind. A competitive renewal, he’s value to hit the frame at least.
3:45 Chester
The final race on ITV is the Darley Maiden Stakes and six runners are scheduled to go to post.
I think BANDERAS (EVS) will be a tough nut to crack in this. He looks the best out of the horses we’ve seen and I’m hoping he can use his experience to get the better of two interesting newcomers. He was unlucky not to win last time out finishing a very close second at Newbury. It’s only a matter of time until he gets his head in front and with Ryan Moore taken over the reigns, I’d expect today to be that day.
