2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener on Day 3 is for the speedy 2 year-olds and it is of course the Norfolk Stakes over 5 furlongs.
It’s NOCHE MAGICA (15/2) EW for me in here. The Paddy Twomey are a shrewd yard and they are often underestimated in the market. This horse was an impressive winner on debut at Cork showing he is all speed. He then backed that up with a fine second over 6f at the Curragh. He travelled the best into that and this return to 5f looks ideal. The winner has boosted the form with a fine effort in the Coventry Stakes on Tuesday and I think he’s the value in the line-up.
3:05 Royal Ascot
Next up at 3:05 we have a really competitive renewal of the King George V Stakes over 1m4f.
I do like TAGABAWA (9/2) NAP in here for Charlie Appleby. He ran twice at the back end of 2022 finishing first on debut at Wolves before a third placed effort at Kempton. Being a late foal, I think connections just wanted to get some experience into him and they knew he’d come into his own this year. He shown us just that when powering clear to win by 4L at Kempton on his handicap debut back in April on his sole start this season. That form didn’t look much at the time but his three rivals have certainly boosted the form since. I think he’s a horse on a serious upward curve and he’s been put away for this since. I imagine connections have had this in mind off his current mark and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t win.
3:40 Royal Ascot
The 3:40 contest is the Ribblesdale Stakes, a Group 2 for the 3 year-old fillies over 1m4f.
I’d play VILLAGE VOICE (25/1) EW here. A winner of a Thurles maiden on debut in October, she was pitched into Group 3 action on her second start and finished a very respectful third. She made her seasonal return at Navan in April winning a listed race over 1m2f. That was on deep ground so this 1m4f on quicker ground shouldn’t hold any fears. Trainer Jessie Harrington has a fine record in this race and if she can handle the faster ground, she’ll do for me.
4:20 Royal Ascot
The feature comes up at 4:20, the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup over the marathon 2m4f trip.
I’d chance SUBJECTIVIST (10/1) EW here. A really impressive winner of this race back in 2021, he’s had his injury problems since. After a long break due to a tendon injury he returned to action in Saudi Arabia in February this year and he obviously needed the run. He then went to Meydan and ran a lot better finishing a good third staying on well over 2 miles. Hopefully he can continue to improve run to run, and returning to the scene of his best effort over a more ideal trip, I’d chance him at the price.
5:00 Royal Ascot
The 5:00 race is the Britannia Stakes, a competitive handicap over the famous straight mile at Ascot.
It’s DOCKLANDS (12/1) EW for me here. A serious improver this season finishing second on seasonal return before two impressive wins on his latest two starts. Last time out here at Ascot was as easy as you’d like, travelling strongly and picking up well to win going away by over 6L. Hayley Turner rides this track very well and if the selection can cope with a quicker surface, he has to go close. I think he’s the most talented horse in the race.
5:35 Royal Ascot
The Hampton Court Stakes comes up at 5:35, a Group 3 contest over 1m2f for 3 year-olds.
I’d chance OVIEDO (40/1) EW here at a big price. He was highly tried at the age of 2 after an impressive debut victory at Doncaster. He then went to the Acomb Stakes on just his second start and ran a cracker finishing third. Things didn’t go to plan since but he definitely had ground excuses on the next two occasions. He was a good winner over this trip last time out at Redcar back on a quicker surface and with trainer Ed Bethell having his best season to date, I’ll change him at the price.
6:10 Royal Ascot
The final race is the Buckingham Palace Stakes, a handicap over 7f.
It’s SPIRIT OF LIGHT (20/1) EW for me here. He arguably should have won last time out at York getting no run at a crucial stage and staying on into 4th. He was not beaten far there and he remains on the same mark of 100. Trainer Ian Williams knows the time of day and he’s capable in this type of race. The selection has a draw of stall 30 which could be really good or really bad. Fingers crossed it’s the right side of the draw. He should be staying on well and the stiff finish will suit.
