2:30 Royal Ascot
The opener on Friday is the Albany Stakes, a Group 3 for the 2 year-old fillies over 6f.
It’s SOPRANO (5/1) NB for me here. The market vibes were encouraging and she duly obliged when winning a traditionally decent maiden at Newmarket on Guineas weekend. She showed blazing speed there and beat a decent yardstick in Midnight Affair who boosted the form thereafter. Drawn in stall 16, I think that’s the place to be in this race and with William Buick jocked up, she’ll do for me in this.
3:05 Royal Ascot
The first of two Group 1 races is the Commonwealth Cup for the 3 year-olds over 6 furlongs.
I think LITTLE BIG BEAR (11/10) NAP has to be the nap of the meeting. The best 2 year-old last season, he had obvious excuses when making his comeback in the 2000 Guineas. He returned to sprinting at Haydock when bolting up in the Sandy Lane Stakes. Bradsell has boosted that form since and this race should set up perfectly for him. Shaquille is the pace angle and he should set it up nicely for the selection.
3:40 Royal Ascot
Next up at 3:40 is the competitive Duke of Edinburgh Stakes over 1m4f.
It’s LIVE YOUR DREAM (14/1) EW for me in this competitive renewal. He was well-fancied and tipped up in the column when making his comeback run at Haydock earlier this month. That race was very tactical over 1m4f and given the fact, he is proven over further, that wouldn’t have suited him. He’s guaranteed a stronger pace here and hopefully, he’ll come on for that effort. He has a nice draw in stall 18 and should get a clear run at it in the home straight. He’ll be staying on better than most and can hit the frame at least.
4:20 Royal Ascot
The feature on Friday is the Group 1 Coronation Stakes for the 3 year-old fillies over the mile.
It’s SOUNDS OF HEAVEN (12/1) here for me. This improving sort beat the re-opposing Queen For You at York last time out in a tactical affair where she was near the front and Queen Of You came from off the pace. I think this may prove tactical again and a similar scenario could well occur. She is the likely pace angle and she should get an easy time in front. Jessie Harrington has a good record in this race winning it in 2018 and 2020 and I think she can have another interesting contender on her hands at a decent price.
5:00 Royal Ascot
The 5:00 race is the Sandringham Stakes, a 3 year-old handicap for the fillies over the straight mile.
I’ve landed on JACKIE OH (7/1) here. She was a good winner on debut at Naas before finishing second at Navan on his second and final 2 year-old start. Connections were obviously happy with how he wintered given the fact she was then pitched into the Irish 1000 Guineas on her return. She finished a very respectable 5th that day suggesting quicker ground would not be an issue despite her debut win coming on heavy. Her half-sister Onassis won this race back in 2020 which is encouraging and I think she may end up being better that a handicapper.
5:35 Royal Ascot
The 5:35 race is the King Edward VII Stakes, a Group 2 contest over 1m4f.
I’m happy to take on King Of Steel here with CONTINUOUS (6/1). Aiden O’Brien is having a great week and he has a great record in this contest. This is his only entry and that could prove significant here. He won both starts at two before making an encouraging reappearance effort this season when finishing third in the Dante Stakes at York. He disappointed last time out over in France in the Prix du Jockey Club but I’m happy to forgive one bad run.
6:10 Royal Ascot
The finale on Friday so the wide-open Palace of Holyrood House Stakes over the 5f trip.
It’s JER BATT (12/1) EW in the finale that I like. He shown useful form when over in Ireland but he has really improved and excelled since joining the David Barron yard this season. He’s 2/4 this season and finished 2nd on both other starts. He was a really unlucky second last time out at Chester as he was drawn in the car park and had to cover a lot of ground to make his challenge there. I’d expect him to reverse the form with the winner Danger Alert today. Colin Keane is a great jockey booking and this fast pace handicap on decent ground should suit him well.
