1:35 Kempton

The first of 10 races on a cracking day’s action is the Group 3 September Stakes over 1m4f.

It’s BAY BRIDGE (5/4) for me here. He is the class act in the field and if he’s anywhere near his true running, he’ll be winning this. This 1m4f trip shouldn’t be a problem and he’s a previous winner on the all weather so the surface will be fine. He’s hard to oppose in the opener on everything we know.

1:50 Haydock

The first race from Haydock comes up at 1:50 and it’s another Group 3, the Superior Mile Stakes.

Light Infantry is the form horse but doesn’t like to win so at the prices I’ll take a swing at POINT LYNAS (20/1) EW. He was really unlucky when going from the front at York last time out and being done on the line. He is the only pace angle in here again and if it does get tactical, he could definitely be a tough nut to crack. This is a big step up but he’ll find it a lot easier to adopt his preferred front running tactics here and I’ll take a chance at the price he slips away from them.

2:10 Kempton

The 2:10 from Kempton is the London Mile Series Final Handicap with 14 runners set to run.

The one I’ve landed on is BALTIMORE BOY (15/2) EW. He was highly tried early in the season and things didn’t quite go as expected. However, he came from last to first over this course and distance last time out to qualify for this. There is plenty of place on again here so that’ll definitely suit his running style. With that win under his belt now, he’ll have gained some confidence and off just 2lb higher, he’ll do for me.

2:25 Haydock

Next up at Haydock is the 2:25 and it is a trappy handicap for the 3 year-old stayers over 1m6f.

It’s DENMARK (3/1) NB for me here. A real typical 3 year-old improver for Aiden O’Brien, he ran a cracker when finishing ahead of some of his re-opposing rivals when second in the Melrose two weeks ago at York. That race is a contest that always tends to work out wel and I’d expect this years renewal to be no different. That effort was a big step forward and you’d expect further improvement again here. James Doyle has teamed up well with connections this season and will be relishing the idea of another winner for the Coolmore operation.

2:35 Ascot

We head to Ascot for two races, the first a typical Ascot handicap over the straight 7 furlongs.

It’s HICKORY (6/1) NAP for me here. James Fanshawe does well in these Ascot handicaps and there’s no better example than Fresh. Hickory ran over this course and distance last time out and finished a really good second at a huge 50/1. This race isn’t as deep and with Saffie Osbourne maintaining the ride and Hickory only running off 2lb higher, it’s hard to see him not going very close here. Stall 14 will hopefully prove to be the ideal spot.

2:45 Leopardstown

The first of two Group 1s from Leopardstown comes up at 2:45 and first we have the Matron Stakes for fillies and mares over the mile.

It’s JUST BEAUTIFUL (11/1) EW for me here. The favourite Tahiyra will take a lot of beating but again, this race has a nice each-way feel to it. The selection Just Beautiful has a straightforward way of going, she’ll jump out the gates and bowl along in front. She’s a strong stayer at the mile as she proved when winning well over at the Curragh last time out pulling clear of a solid yardstick in Jumbly to win by over 2 lengths. In a race with 13 runners, there is bound to be a few hard luck stories round this track. However, that shouldn’t be the case for the selection who’ll be at the front and will be looking to quicken when some of her rivals will be trying to get out.

3:00 Haydock

We head back to Haydock for the 3:00 and it is the competitive Old Borough Cup Handicap over 1m6f.

I’ll chance POST IMPRESSIONIST (15/2) here. He’s been fairly disappointing this season but he’s had genuine excuses a lot of the time running far too keen in the Northumberland Plate held up and the ground was far too heavy from him at Goodwood. He finished 9th last time out in the Ebor but was only beaten just over 3 lengths. That is by far his best run of the season and hopefully he can come forward from that now and kick on to close the season. He’s dropped 2lb this season and on a going day, he’s more than worthy of winning off his current mark of 93. Tom Marquand takes the ride and he’s been banging in the winners here at Haydock throughout the season.

3:10 Ascot

The 3:10 from Ascot is the Lavazza Stakes, another competitive handicap, again for 3 year-olds but this time over 1m4f.

It’s OVERACTIVE (13/2) for me here. The Ralph Beckett team continue in fine fettle and I think they can add another Saturday ITV winner here. Overactive is a progressive sort that’s won his last two starts in decisive fashion. He was a really good winner on his latest of them two starts at Leicester where he shown a potent turn of foot to put the race to bed between the 2f and 1f marker. He was eased down close to him winning by 2 lengths. It’s good to come wide into the straight over this trip at Ascot and from stall 5, I’m hoping Laura Pearson keeps him out there. She can then use his turn of foot in the straight and hopefully land this competitive handicap.

3:20 Leopardstown

The 3:20 is an intriguing renewal of the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes over the 1m2f trip, always a fascinating race on the calendar.

It’s KING OF STEEL (7/2) for me here. The Derby runner-up was clear that day with 2 furlongs to go before being outstayed by the re-opposing Auguste Rodin late on. He then went to Royal Ascot and won the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes easily enough coming from off the pace to be well on top at the line. On his next and latest start, he finished third in what was a classy renewal of the Group 1 King George VI Stakes. The front two pulled clear that day and King Of Steel just looked to run out of gas late on finishing the best of the remainder. I think this 1m2f is his perfect trip and Kevin Stott will be able to ride him without stamina concerns at this level for the first time. He’ll do for me.

3:35 Haydock

The feature from Haydock follows and it is the Group 1 Sprint Cup ran over the 6f trip.

It’s an each-way race and it’s SWINGALONG (25/1) EW I will chance. She has a draw of stall 18 right up against the stands rail and we’ve seen earlier in the season here at Haydock that there has been a real bias for the high numbers. She has form over 5f and is always fast away from the gates so she should have no issues bagging that favoured rail. She won at York over 6f last time out so the trip should hold no fears. I’d be hopeful she can cling on for a place at the very least under ideal conditions.
