ITV Racing Tips for St Leger Day on Saturday 16th September

ITV Racing are covering four races from Doncaster and two from Chester on Saturday 16th September and we have asked Henry to pick out his best bet from each race.

There is a total of seven races from Doncaster on Saturday but only four are being shown on ITV Racing so we are focusing on those races for our betting tips as well as the two from Chester.

Doncaster Saturday Lucky 15 Tip

1.50pm – ROSALLION (4/9)

2.25pm – CALL ME GINGER (8/1)

3.00pm – SPYCATCHER (11/8)

3.35pm – CONTINUOUS (3/1)

 

1:50 Doncaster 

The first race on St Leger Day is the Group 2 Champagne Stakes over 7f for the 2 year-old colts.

It’s just hard to get away from the favourite ROSALLION (4/9) here who comes into this race 2-2 and looks a really promising 2 year-old for the Richard Hannon stable. He was a good winner of a decent enough maiden when well fancied at Newbury on racecourse debut before then going to Ascot and winning a listed race as easy as you’d like by 4 lengths. The second that day has since won on his next start also at listed level to boost that form and this favourite just looks hard to oppose in my opinion.

 

2:05 Chester

The first of two races from Chester is the Stand Cup Stakes, a listed race over the extended 1m4f.

You’d be disappointed if BLUESTOCKING (8/11) wasn’t winning this. She brings a decent level of solid Group 1 form to the table and being the 3 year-old in here, she gets plenty of weight off her two main rivals as well. She arguably should have won the Irish Oaks on soft ground two starts back when trading at a very short price in running. That form is on another level to her rivals here and she’s another who’s she’s to oppose.

 

2:25 Doncaster 

The 2:25 race is the competitive Portland Handicap with 22 runners set to go to post for the extended 5f sprint.

It’s CALL ME GINGER (8/1) EW here for the Jim Goldie. The winner of this race last year off a mark of 89, he returns to defend his crown this year off just a 2lb higher mark of 91. He comes here in better form this season too winning his last two starts at Chester and Ascot. He has a low stall which looks the place to be with plenty of pace in and around him. The track obviously suits his held up running style well as the stiff finish is good for the closers. I think he’s bound to go close again under last years winning jockey Amie Waugh again claiming 5.

 

2:40 Chester

The second race from Chester comes up at 2:40 and it is a a tricky handicap for the elders over an extended 1m2f.

It is BARYSHNIKOV (5/1) in this for me. He is down to his lowest mark in quite a while running off 97 here and this looks like his optimum conditions. He has a fine record here at Chester with three course victories to his name and he enjoys cut in the ground. He was a winner off a mark of 91 last season and I think he can go close off 87 today. Ben Curtis takes the ride which is an encouraging jockey booking.

 

3:00 Doncaster 

We head back to Doncaster for the 3:00 contest, the Park Stakes, a Group 2 race over the 7f trip.

It’s SPYCATCHER (11/8) NB for me here. Karl Burke is flying and the selection is in the form of his life at present. He won a Group 3 by 3 lengths two starts back before going down by a short head at Group 1 level last time out. He was unlucky there just failing to get up and compensation awaits. He drops to Group 2 level and this looks weak enough. He’s proven on soft ground and will relish it a lot more than most his rivals.

 

3:35 Doncaster 

The feature ends proceedings, the Group 1 St Leger Stakes, the final classic of the season over the extended 1m6f.

It’s CONTINUOUS (10/3) NAP for me here. A career best last time out when coming from off the pace to beat the re-opposing Gregory at York in the Great Voltigeur last time out by over 4 lengths. He’s a typical Aiden O’Brien improver and I get the impression he’ll relish going up in trip a further 2 furlongs here. He won his only start on soft ground when winning a Group 3 over in France as a 2 year-old. He’s a horse peaking at the right time and with Ryan Moore on board, it’s hard to get away from him in my opinion.
