ITV Racing Tips for Ayr and Newbury on Saturday 23rd September

1:15 Ayr

The opener on ITV is a mile handicap for the 3 year-olds and older.

The one I like here is REVICH (5/1). He’ll get a lovely spot here just tracking the leaders who are likely to be Isla Kai and Titan Rock which is a set up that suits him well. He ran a good third at Chester last time out not beaten far and now returns to this race in which he was third last year off the same mark. I think he looks sure to run a very good race with Hollie Doyle in the saddle.

 

1:30 Newbury

The first race from Newbury is the 1:30 and it is the World Trophy Stakes, a Group 3 for the sprinters over 5f.

I like RAASEL (11/4) here who is well suited by a race of this nature. He enjoys small fields where he can track the pace and not worry about any traffic issues. He was a good winner two starts back before a good second at listed level at Doncaster last time out. He has won on soft ground so I’m hoping this ground won’t be an issue.

 

1:50 Ayr

The 1:50 from Ayr is the Doonside Cup, a listed race over 1m2f.

It’s hard to get away from ROYAL RHYME (6/4) here. A 3 year-old on an upward curve who really enjoys soft conditions. He bolted up at Goodwood over this trip last time out and this race doesn’t look as deep. Pride Of America should give him a lovely toe into this and I’d expect them two to fight it out. I just think Royal Rhyme has a class edge and could be better than listed class.

 

2:05 Newbury 

The 2:05 race is the Autumn Cup Handicap over the extended 1m5f trip.

It’s SEA KING (7/2) NAP for me here. An impressive winner from the front at Goodwood two starts back where he galloped them into submission from the front. He then went to the Melrose at York and disappointed. That probably came too soon and that was on a much quicker surface than the Goodwood run and what he’ll get today. This is a drop in class and back on undercut conditions, I’d expect hun to resume his improvement. He’s the likely pace angle on a track that suits being close to the pace too.

 

2:25 Ayr

We head back to Ayr for the 2:25 and it is the Silver Cup, a trappy handicap over the 6 furlong trip.

It’s JUMP THE GUN (8/1) EW in this for me. He comes here in solid form after being just touched off by the re-opposing Rathbone last time out at Doncaster. He was unlucky there and I’d expect that form to be reversed on this occasion granted better luck in running. He’s a previous winner here at Ayr and from stall 12 jockey William Pyle will have plenty of options. William Pyle claims a valuable 5lb which means the selection gets weight from everyone of his rivals. 

 

2:40 Newbury

The 2:40 contest from Newbury is another handicap, this time over 1m2f.

I’d chance CERTAIN LAD (9/1) here who ran a cracker last time out at Sandown finishing a good second behind Dual Identity who was handicapped to win if returning to form. Certain Lad remains off the same mark of 101 for this which looks generous and this race doesn’t have as much depth as that Sandown handicap did in my opinion. He has form on soft ground so conditions won’t phase him. I think he’s being overlooked in the market as the 3 year-olds near the head of the market have “sexier” profiles. 

 

3:00 Ayr

The 3:00 race from Ayr is the Firth Of Clyde, a Group 3 for the 2 year-old fillies over 6f.

It’s PRETTY CRYSTAL (5/1) EW for me here. A lot of her rivals are open to significant improvement but she sets a fairly useful standard and you’d be surprised if there is three better than her here which makes her a cracking each-way bet. She won well on debut before being pitched into Group 3 level at Royal Ascot where she finished a good 5th in the Albany Stakes. She’s since ran well in two Group 3’s finishing second and then 4th last time out behind Darnation who looks a really useful sort. That was over 7f and she weakened late on which suggests this return to 6f looks a good move. 

 

3:15 Newbury

The feature at Newbury comes up at 3:15 and it is the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes for the 2 year-olds over 6f.

It’s SEVEN QUESTIONS (4/1) NB for me here. The George Scott stable are flying at the moment and Seven Questions brings the best form into this race although he is a little more exposed than some of his rivals. Never finished worse than 4th in seven career starts including a close third at listed level, I’m hoping he’ll be able to use his experience and land this weak renewal of the Mill Reef. He’s proven on soft ground having won well on it at Ripon earlier in the season and he’ll prove a tough nut to crack here from the front.

 

3:35 Ayr 

The final is the feature, the competitive Ayr Gold Cup, a handicap over the 6f trip with 25 runners set to to go to post.

It’s FAST RESPONSE (20/1) EW for me here. The more rain that falls the better for her here. She’s 2lb well in for this after a fine second behind Mitbaahy at Chester last time out where she was beaten a length. Mitbaahy is a Group class performer on a going day so that’s no disgrace and the market support was there suggesting connections think she’s still improving. Brandon Wilkie takes the ride and he is definitely value for his 7lb claim. He has a great record for the stable operating at a 25% strike rate and from stall 3, I’m hoping he’ll be able to bag the rail on Fast Response and take his chances from there.
