ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 13th January from Kempton and Warwick
1:30 Kempton
The first of three live races from Kempton is the Coral Handicap Chase over the 3 mile trip.
I expect FLEGMATIK (5/2) NB to win this. He returns to his favourite track in Kempton in fine form this season coming off two crackers in handicap company. First of those was a fine second behind Your Darling who was on one of his going days and last time was a fine third placed effort at Ascot in a deep handicap. He likes to be ridden cold and there’s plenty of pace on here which will suit him well. He’ll do for me in the opener.
1:49 Warwick
The first of four races from Warwick is the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle over 3m1f.
It’s MEL MONROE (11/4) for me here. Gordon Elliot sends her over trying to get her qualified for the final in March. She’d want to be winning this race to guarantee a run so I think she’ll be trying. She’s easily the most unexposed sort in this line-up and the six year-old looks set to appreciate the step up in trip. She’s ran well on soft ground in the past and I think she’ll be a tough nut to crack.
2:07 Kempton
The 2:07 from Kempton is an intriguing renewal of the Grade 2 Silviniaco Conti Chase over 2m5f.
The one for me is EDWARDSTONE (11/4). He has ran two decent races in Grade 1’s this season finishing behind the top class Jonbon on both occasions. He was entitled to come on for the first of those at Cheltenham and handily he duly did when beaten just under 3 lengths last time out in the Tingle Creek. He does look like he’ll appreciate this step up in trip now and he could arguably improve for it, certainly on this seasons effort anyway. He’ll enjoy the ground and he’s the one for me in this.
2:24 Warwick
We head back to Warwick for the 2:24 contest, the Grade 2 Hampton Novices Chase and it is a decent renewal.
The one I like in here is GREY DAWNING (5/2) NAP. He should have won last time out at Cheltenham but he belted the second last. He done well to stay on so strongly up the hill there suggesting this trip is his ideal. Prior to that, he was a decent winner at Haydock pulling way clear of the re-opposing Apple Away. I can’t see how that form will be reversed here on a track that looks set to suit Grey Dawning more. Broadway Boy has been a great flag bearer for the Twiston-Davies yard but he’s had plenty of runs now and could be vulnerable in this. Grey Dawning won well here over hurdles and I’m confident he can follow up this season over the Chase course.
2:42 Kempton
The final race from Kempton is a wide-open renewal of the Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle over 2m5f.
I like SONIGINO (13/2) in this for the duo of Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden. He caught the eye when finishing a staying on 4th in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham back in November and he appeared to relish the step up in trip when winning easily at Aintree over 2m4f in December. He’s a gutsy hardy horse who handles any ground which is what you want in a race of this nature. He’s on an upward curve and I don’t think we’ve got to the bottom of him yet. I think he’ll continue his improvement and go well here.
3:00 Warwick
The 3:00 is the Classic Handicap Chase for the stayers over the 3m5f.
It’s GALIA DES LITEAUX (9/1) for me here. She has looked better than a handicapper on a going day and I get the impression she’ll really relish a race of this nature on handicap debut. She likes to bowl along and when she jumps well, she gets into a lovely racing rhythm and looked a Graded chaser. However, things can go wrong and that why I think she’s a decent price here. She was underwhelming last time out finishing second behind a decent enough mare in Pink Legend but she’ll need more here. Skelton reaches for the cheekpieces and im hoping that helps her concentrate. The soft ground is certainly in her favour and I think she can go well.
3:35 Warwick
The final race is the re-arranged Veterans Handicap Chase. 17 runners are set to go to post for the 3m race.
I do like AYE RIGHT (7/1) here. Connections have said that was always his main target for the season and I think there’s plenty of encouragement to take from his two runs this season. He was second on seasonal return but that doesn’t tell half the story as he idled badly on the run in and was caught close to home by Good Boy Bobby. He then finished 3rd here at Warwick behind Thomas Darby last time out not beaten far. He didn’t jump as well as normal that day and if he returns to the way he jumped at Chepstow the time before, with Dylan Johnston claiming 7lb off, I’d be expecting a very bold bid.
