2:30 Royal Ascot

The opener on the final day is the Chesham Stakes, a listed contest over 7f for the 2 year-olds.

The horse I like in the opener is PENTLE BAY (9/1) He’s 1-1 with his victory coming in a Leicester maiden over 6f. However, that only tells half the story as he was hampered at the start and did extremely well to pick them off from last. He stayed on powerfully there suggesting this step up in trip is bound to bring out further improvement. The George Boughey stable are in fine fettle and he has to go into this with a big chance.

3:05 Royal Ascot

It is Group 2 action next with the Hardwicke Stakes over 1m4f.

It’s MIDDLE EARTH (5/2) NAP for me here. A very progressive 3 year-old last season which included an impressive win in the always competitive Melrose Handicap at York. He didn’t run his race in the St Leger after that but that was on soft ground and he duly bounced back with victory here at Ascot on a sounder surface to end his campaign. He returned to action in a Group 3 contest at Newbury and looked better than ever. Despite a slow start, he managed to reel them in getting up close to home. The second there, King Of Conquest, has won since so the form is solid. I think Middle Earth can improve again and land the Hardwicke under preferred conditions.

3:40 Royal Ascot

The 3:40 is the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, a Group 1 over 6f.

The one for me is MILL STREAM (5/1). He was a progressive 3 year-old last season but he has definitely kicked on again at 4 and continued on that upward curve. He returned to action at Newmarket in April finishing a good second giving the winner first run on a speed favouring track. He duly put that right next one out when landing the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes. That was a competitive renewal of the contest and he battled on well to win that getting up in the final strides. This stiff Ascot 6f will arguably suit him better and it’s good to see William Buick keep the ride.

4:25 Royal Ascot

Next up at 4:25 is the Group 3 Jersey Stakes over 7f.

I think RIVER TIBER (7/4) NB will take this. There is not a lot between him and the re-opposing Haatem on their Irish 1000 Guineas form but that was River Tiber’s seasonal reappearance. Therefore, he is entitled to improve for it and I don’t see the drop back to 7f here as an inconvenience. He gets 3lb off his main rival Haatem which certainly helps and with Rosallion obviously boosting that form significantly when winning the Group 1 St James Palace Stakes here on Tuesday, I think it’ll be faught out between the pair with River Tiber coming out on top.

5:05 Royal Ascot

The 5:05 is the Wokingham Stakes, a competitive handicap over 6f.

The selection here is HARRY THREE (16/1) EW. Going back to 2022, he was highly thought of after bolting up in a York handicap looking like a seriously promising 3 year-old sprinter.  He then finished that season with two runs in Group 1 races, he disappointed in the first of them over in France but he didn’t disgrace him by any stretch of the imagination when 6th at Haydock in the Group 1 Sprint Cup. The obvious concern is he missed 2023 through injury but he returned to action last month at Salisbury finishing a solid 4th. He travelled well there and just tired late on. Hopefully, that has put him spot on for this and it’s interesting that connections have managed to get Ryan Moore for this who is 2-2 on the horse. Off a mark of 104, if he can return to anywhere near his best, which is a big if of course, he’d do well to not be winning this and that’s a chance I’m happy to take in a competitive handicap.

5:40 Royal Ascot

The penultimate race of the week is the Golden Gate Stakes over the 1m2f trip.

I’ve landed on APPROVAL (7/1) EW in this. After finishing second twice at Wolverhampton to start the season, he returned to the turf at Windsor earlier this month and looked a different proposition. He made all the running there pulling clear in the home straight before finding extra to repel the final challenger off close to home. I expect he’ll sit handy again and stall 6 is a good spot if he is looking to go forward. I have no doubt there is scope off his current handicap mark and trainer Williams Haggas excels with these 3 year-old improving sorts.

6:15 Royal Ascot

The final race of the Royal meeting is the 6:15, the marathon Queen Alexandra Stakes over 2m5f.

It’s RUN FOR OSCAR (5/1) here for me. He was the best horse in this race last year and he should have won but Jim Crowley just couldn’t get him out from the inside rail. I expect this has been the main target ever since and you’d have to be hopeful he can reverse the form with favourite Dawn Rising based on that 2023 renewal. Stall 11 is fine as he shouldn’t get stuck on the inside again here and jockey Maxine Guyon will hopefully keep him out wider. Run For Oscar has ran two mediocre races this season but they were over inadequate trips and I’m sure they were to just put him spot on for this contest. His shrewd connections have opted to put the visor back on suggesting they mean business and he will do for me in the finale.
