ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 20th July from Newbury and Market Rasen

Newbury racing tips

1:50 Newbury

The first race is the Stevenson Stakes, a listed race over 1m2f.

It is AL AASY (3/1) for me here at the prices. I don’t think there is much between the two market leaders and at the prices I’d chance Al Aasy. Although Jim Crowley opts for the favourite, Tom Marquand is a really good replacement on the selection. Al Aasy won this race last season so obviously enjoys this course and distance and he has won twice after a long break, so I’d be hopeful fitness isn’t too much of a concern.  Market vibes may tell us a lot but I think the price difference at the time of writing is too big.

2:05 Market Rasen

We have some summer jumps action on ITV from Market Rasen. The first is the 2:05, a handicap hurdle over the extended 2m4f.

I like FLYING FORTUNE (9/2) NAP here for the Peter Bowen team. I think this 5 year-old is well handicapped off a mark of 109 and I think this will have been her main aim. She ran a cracker on stable debut behind the improving Gale Mahler keeping on well and pulling clear of the remainder of the field. That was stable debut and seasonal debut so she’s entitled to improve for it. She’s off the same mark here and compensation may await.

2:25 Newbury

The 2:25 from Newbury is a handicap over the extended 2 miles for the stayers.

It is KYLE OF LOCHALSH (7/2) NB for me here. The 4 year-old is an improving stayer who comes here on the back a career best effort when finishing a close third in the Ascot Stakes last time out. He stayed on well there from off the pace and he’s only up 2lb. He’s a previous winner here at Newbury and he won his start prior to Royal Ascot in impressive fashion at Salisbury. He’s on an upward curve and will take a fair bit of beating in my book.

2:40 Market Rasen

The 2:40 is a wide-open handicap hurdle over the extended 2 mile trip.

It’s MOSTLY SUNNY (17/2) for me here for the Skelton team. The team excel in handicap hurdles especially over the minimum trip and I have no doubt we have not got to the bottom of Mostly Sunny yet. He was unlucky not to win last time out going down by a nose to the re-opposing Maxcel. Mostly Sunny is learning all the time and this is just his fifth start over obstacles. He takes a hold so this type of race looks sure to see how to best effect and at the prices, I’m happy to take a chance on the unexposed Skelton horse.

3:00 Newbury

It’s back to Newbury for the 3:00 race. It is the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes over the 6f trip.

A trappy race but they all have to step up to reach the level of REGIONAL (5/2) and he’s the one for me here. Regional has high level Group 1 form that includes a victory in the Group 1 Sprint Cup over this trip last season. He ran a cracker when second at Royal Ascot in the King Charles III Stakes at the Royal Meeting when we last seen him. He had to skip the Group 1 July Cup last week due to softening ground and as long as the rain stays away here, compensation awaits at a much lower level.

3:15 Market Rasen

The final race from Market Rasen is the 3:15, the Summer Plate handicap chase over the extended 2m5f.

It’s FRANCKY DU BERLAIS (9/1) EW for me here. He has a fantastic record in this race having won it in both 2021 and 2022. He was bidding for the hat-trick last year but soft ground wouldn’t have suited. He’s off a 9lb lower mark now than when landing this race two years ago and he has shown enough this season suggest he’s not done yet. Connections will have him spot on for this and he looks a fair each-way selection in a wide open race.

3:35 Newbury

The final race is the competitive Super Sprint Stakes for the 2 year-olds over 5f.

It is VINGEGAARD (13/2) for me here. He won well on debut despite showing signs of inexperience at Chepstow but that was enough for connections to think he was a Royal Ascot 2 year-old. He justified that with a fine effort finishing 5th in the Windsor Castle. He was leading until close to home and this more speed favouring track will suit him more. He’s on an upward curve and the stable have landed this contest two years ago so they know what it takes.
