Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips for Newbury, Ripon and Newmarket
1:50 Newbury
The first of four live races comes up at 1:50. It is the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes over the extended 1m5f trip.
At the prices I’d favour AL QAREEM (7/2) in this as Al Aasy isn’t a horse to put your trust in at odds-on. The selection will go from the front here and try and utilise his stamina here. He’s a gutsy horse that has a willing attitude and he gets a valuable 3lb from the favourite in this. Al Aasy steps up in trip and if this does become a stamina test, it certainly won’t suit him. Al QAREEM has a good course record here at Newbury twice finishing second at this level and hopefully he can now make it third-time lucky and land this Group 3 contest. Sumo Sam would be interesting if the rain came but that doesn’t look likely at this stage.
2:05 Newmarket
The one race from Newmarket is the popular Grey horse handicap over the 6f trip.
It’s FIRST FOLIO (7/2) for me in this. The Julie Camacho time are in fine fettle at the moment with a strike rate of 31% in the last two weeks. Newmarket is a track the yard have done well at and I think First Folio can defy top weight and land this. When we last seen him, he wasn’t beaten far behind Jordan Electrics at Hamilton and that horse has since won again off a mark of 96. First Folio runs here off 86 and if he runs to form, he has to be bang there. This isn’t a deep handicap by any stretch of the imagination and he looks the best horse in the race to my eye.
2:25 Newbury
The 2:25 from Newbury is a trappy 5f handicap.
The one for me is MYCONIAN (10/1) EW He was a decent 2 year-old last season for the small Amy Murphy stable which included a fine 6th in the Windsor Castle before winning at listed level over in France. He earned a mark of 99 as a result and found life difficult at this start of the year. However, he’s now down to a more realistic mark of 84 and he’s coming off his best run this season when finishing a good second at Newmarket last time out. Hopefully, he’s turned a cover now and can go close off the same mark in this.
2:45 Ripon
The first of two competitive 6f handicaps in the Silver Trophy handicap.
It’s SUPREME KING (10/1) NAP for me here who looks a winner in waiting off his current mark of 78. Things just haven’t got his way recently. He was fourth at Windsor two starts back where he was hampered at the start and was given a lot to do on a track that favours front runners. He did all his best work late on keeping on into 4th, beaten less than 2 lengths. He then went to Brighton last time out and definitely should have won. He was trapped behind a wall of horses and when he got room after switching, he absolutely flew home but just got the gap too late and could only manage to finish runner-up. Off a pound higher, I expect a bold display in this. The race will set up well for him with pace to aim at and hopefully the gaps come for him with plenty of room across the track.
3:00 Newbury
We head back to Newbury for the 3:00 race which is a competitive 7f handicap.
The one I’ve landed on is UNITED APPROACH (13/2) EW from the James Tate stable. He is unexposed at this level and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of this 4 year-old yet. Twice a winner over 6 furlongs, he put a mediocre effort behind him when we last seen at Newcastle where he finished a staying on second. That was a fine effort on his first run over 7f and with stamina assured, I think he can go well here. There is plenty of pace on with the likes of Lethal Levi likely to go a decent gallop and that’ll suit his running style well. I think he can improve again for this type of race and run a career best.
3:20 Ripon
Ripon’s feature race of the year comes up at 3:20, the Great St Wilfrid Handicap over 6 furlongs.
Sticking with the David Evans and Dylan Hogan theme, I like RADIO GOO GOO (12/1) EW in this. We’ve seen plenty of the winners of big handicaps throughout the season go to a horse that made all and I think the selection can add to it. She was a course and distance winner here at Ripon back in May where she adopted them tactics and won comfortably. She has since won at Chester off a mark of 87 and I think she can go close back here at Ripon again for just 2lb higher. She’ll enjoy the fast surface and she does have an impressive 6 victories from 22 turf starts which shows us she knows how to get her head in front. I think she has a fantastic chance in this competitive handicap.
3:35 Newbury
The feature ends proceedings on ITV, the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over the 7f trip.
I do think ENGLISH OAK (11/4) NB is better than what we seen last time out and I’m happy to give him another chance here. This is certainly a weaker Group 2 on paper than the Lennox Stakes he ran in at Goodwood last month. Prior to that, he was progressing well with a victory at Haydock before bolting up in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot by 3 lengths. He looks the one to beat in this and I think he’s a fair price.
