ITV Racing Tips for Ayr and Newbury on Saturday 21st September

Ayr racing tips

1:15 Ayr

The opener on Saturday is a 1m handicap for horses rated between 0-100.

I’ve landed on OBELIX (6/1) who bounced right back to form last time out when running out an impressive winner at Haydock. He’s still well-handicapped based on his past exploits and his confidence should be high after getting back into the winners enclosure. He has to be highly respected in this race in his follow-up bid.

1:30 Newbury

The first of four live races from Newbury comes up at 1:30. It is the Group 3 World Trophy Stakes over 5f.

I think SIGNIFICANTLY (16/1) EW looks overpriced in this. The winner of the Ayr Gold Cup last season has strong handicap form that ties in well with this lot at Group 3 level. He wasn’t disgraced two starts back when finishing sixth not beaten far in a Group 3 at Newmarket. He looked in need of the run after a nice break when we last seen him at York and hopefully, that will have put him spot on for this. Any rain that falls will be in his favour and it has the potential to inconvenience a lot of his rivals. He’s a solid horse that looks overpriced in this.

1:50 Ayr

Next up at Ayr is the Doonside Cup Stakes, a listed race over the 1m2f trip.

The horse I like in ENFJAAR (4/1). I don’t think we’ve got to the bottom of this Roger Varian trained 4 year-old and he’s certainly unexposed compared to a lot of his rivals here today. He was a very good winner of the competitive John Smiths Cup at York earlier this season before then going on to run a cracker finishing an unlucky second  at Glorious Goodwood. He was last seen disappointing back at York but that race just didn’t suit and the drop in distance didn’t appear to play to his strengths. I’m confident he can resume his improvement here stepped back up in trip. He does look capable of winning at listed level.

2:05 Newbury

The 2:05 is the Autumn Cup handicap over the extended 1m5f trip.

It’s WAXING GIBBOUS (7/2) NAP for me here who I thought was very unlucky to finish second in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock last time out going down by a head. Herself and Epic Poet pulled over 4 lengths clear of the remainder of the field there which is impressive given how competitive that handicap always is. She is up 5lb today but that seems more than fair based on that run. She is on an upward curve and she has winning form here at Newbury which is a further positive. I like her chances of getting her head back in front of a mark of 86 which still looks lenient to me.

2:25 Ayr

It’s back to Ayr for the 2:25, the Silver Cup handicap over 6f.

It is SUMMERGHAND (15/2) EW time for me. The 10 year-old has shown enough in recent starts to suggest he’s still capable off his current mark of 89. The previous winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on this card two years ago off a mark of 102 looks primed to go well over a course and distance that we know suits him well. He was an eye-catcher last week over in Ireland where he just got going too late to finish a never nearer 6th. This track will suit him better and if he runs to a similar level again this week, I think he looks sure to be bang there in the Silver Cup.

2:40 Newbury

The next race from Newbury is a trappy 1m2f handicap.

I’d be happy to chance WHIP CRACKER (15/2) here for the Richard Hughes yard. An encouraging season at 2, he made a very encouraging return to action at the start of his 3 year-old campaign when finishing a good second at listed level at Newmarket on said seasonal return. Things didn’t quite go to plan back at that track next time out  where he could only manage to finish third. He was then pitched into the Britannia Stakes at the Royal Meeting and was quietly fancied in the market suggestion connections were hopeful of a bold effort. Things again didn’t quite go to plan there but I really do get the impression when things do click, a mark of 99 will look exploitable. He is coming here now after being freshened up since and fresh off a gelding operation which looks interesting. It is also interesting to see the booking of Ryan Moore which is an obvious plus.

3:00 Ayr

The 3:00 from Ayr is the Group 3 Firth Of Clyde. A race for the 2 year-old fillies over 6 furlongs.

It is SKY MAJESTY (10/3) NB for me in this. The daughter of Blue Point was a winner on debut at Newbury where she shown plenty of pace along with a willing attitude. It is always eye-catching when a William Haggas horse wins first time out as they quite often improve from their first outing significantly. With that further improvement likely, I think she can take another step forward and land this Group 3 contest.

3:15 Newbury

The feature from Newbury is the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes over 6f for the 2 year-olds.

It’s ANDESITE (20/1) EW for me here. He was last seen finishing 7th in the Gimcrack at York and he will have to reverse form here with a couple of the fancied runners towards the head of the market who finished second and third in that contest. However, he hadn’t been seen since a debut victory in May so there’s plenty of optimism for him to improve from that last outing. His debut victory in May at the Dante Meeting was mightily impressive and this son of Pinatubo still has potential. He did look green in the Gimcrack so hopefully that run will have done him good and will have blown the cobwebs off and he’ll settle better this time round Connections have opted to put a tongue-tie on which should help and Oisin Murphy takes the ride which is encouraging.

3:35 Ayr

The feature is the 3:45, the Ayr Gold Cup, the competitive 6f handicap contest.

I’ve landed on STRIKE RED (20/1) EW here for the Richard Fahey stable. A stable that excels in these big sprint handicaps, Strike Red went off a well-backed favourite in Ireland last week suggesting connections were expecting a bold effort from him over there. However, things just didn’t go to plan as he was drawn on the wrong side of the track and couldn’t land a blow. Nothing really got into the race from his side of the track and I’m happy to forgive that effort as a result. He’s the type to bounce back and he sneaks into this off a lovely racing weight of 8’12. Prior to that after last week, he was a very good second in a competitive York handicap behind an improving 3 year-old and that form looks strong. Ayr will suit his running style well and I think he has a great chance providing stall 6 doesn’t prove to be problematic. At the prices, I’ll take a chance as there looks to be enough pace right across the track to hopefully result in there being no bias.
