ITV Racing Tips for Cheltenham and Newcastle on Saturday 16th November

1:45 Cheltenham

The first of four live races from Cheltenham is the Grade 2 Arkle trial over 2 miles.

I’d chance LOOKAWAY (7/2) to turn over the favourite in this. A progressive hurdler last season, he excelled here at Cheltenham with a fine Grade 2 victory and a fine second in the competitive Greatwood Hurdle. He continued to run several solid races throughout the season to back it up. He returned to action this year to make his chase debut at Uttoxeter earlier this month. That was a two-horse race but I think the second will be winning races too. He’s a prominent racer which is an obvious plus here at Cheltenham on quick ground. If he can get into a nice rhythm early, he could have a lot of his rivals in trouble a good way out. He looks to hold a solid chance.

 

2:20 Cheltenham

The feature comes up next, the competitive Paddy Power Gold Cup handicap chase over 2m4f.

I’ve landed on LETS GO CHAMP (10/1) EW here. All runners coming over from Ireland have to be given massive respect, especially from a yard such as Henry De Bromhead’s who have started the season banging in plenty of winners. Let’s Go Champ is progressing through the ranks well and he was a well-backed winner of another competitive handicap at Punchestown towards the back end of the season. He was last seen in the Galway Plate finishing a respectable 6th there weakening late on. This trip suits him better and I think he’s better than his current mark. He’s proven himself in a race of this nature and has experience with the hustle and bustle which is a positive. I think he rates a solid each-way contender.

 

2:55 Cheltenham

Next up at 2:55 is a 3 mile handicap hurdle.

I like DOYEN QUEST (15/8) NB here for the Skeltons. He really got his act together towards the end of last season winning three of his last four starts including a good victory here at Cheltenham. He returned to action at Chepstow in a competitive handicap hurdle where he finished a really good second behind Josh The Boss who just slipped the field from the front. I expect Doyen Quest will improve for that seasonal reappearance and I don’t think he’s finished improving. I like his chances in this.

 

3:15 Newcastle 

The first of two races live from Newcastle comes up at 3:15. It is the Churchill Stakes, a listed contest over 1m2f.

The one I like is PEACE MAN (5/2) NAP who comes here fresher than most given he only returned to the track in October this season. He ended his 4-year-old campaign last season with three decent victories and his two runs this season suggest he has continued that improvement. Despite not getting his head in front, he has run two crackers both at Newmarket and he was unlucky to just miss out last time out there behind Bolster. He’s coming to the boil nicely and can land this in my opinion.

 

3:30 Cheltenham

The 3:30 is another handicap hurdle, this time over the 2m5f trip.

It is HAMYISANN (7/2) for me here who could be absolutely chucked in. Tony Martin knows what it takes to land this race as he won it with a well-backed similar sort in 2022. Hamyisann had a solid juvenile campaign last season progressing well and his best effort was his last run where he finished an unlucky third at Ascot back in March. He’s since ran well on the flat at Chester and a mark of 111 here could certainly end up looking very lenient. I’ll take my chances but I’m sure the market will tell us a lot.

 

3:48 Newcastle 

We end with the listed Golden Rose Stakes over the 6f trip.

I’ll chance SIGNIFICANTLY (20/1) EW here who is a very smart performer on his day and has previous here at Newcastle being a course and distance winner. He likes a strong pace to aim at and he’ll get that today. The stiff finish of Newcastle will always suit his running style well as he’s a closer who is a strong stayer over the trip. He comes here on the back of a wind operation which is interesting and I just think it’s too soon to be writing him off.
