The first selection comes in the opener on Day 1, the Grade 1 Michael O’Sullivan Supreme Novices Hurdle.

I think WILLIAM MUNNY (7/1) can be the one to give the favourite most to think about her. Trained by Barry Connell who has had recent success in this contest with Marine Nationale, it would be a very fitting winner. He was highly thought of as a bumper horse and things have certainly clicked over hurdles recently. He just seems to peaking at the right time and has improved for each outing. Himself and the highly promising Kawaboomga pulled way clear of the field at Fairyhouse two starts back finishing 22 lengths clear of the third and losing nothing in defeat. He duly got a well deserved success last time out at Punchestown and as stated above, he’s peaking at the right time. He’ll enjoy this strong gallop over 2 miles and the first time hood may help bring out further improvement.

Our next selection comes in the Ultima Handicap Chase over the 3m1f trip.

It is HENRYS FRIEND (11/1) for me here for the red-hot Ben Pauling yard. Hailing from Britain, it’s a good place to start in this race as the Irish have a really poor record. He comes into this race in decent nick and relatively fresh which is ideal. His first run was over hurdles to just blow the cobwebs away so that can be ignored. He then went to the Coral Gold Cup and ran a cracker to finish 5th. That is a race that has always worked out well in the Ultima and I can’t see why that would change this year. He was a good winner at Newbury on his last start and up 7lb, I think he can improve again. He’ll sit handy which is a good spot and his experience in big handicaps and good jumping can be a huge asset here.

We head to the Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle for our next selection.

The one I like is BEYOND YOUR DREAMS (6/1). Trainer Joseph O’Brien has a fantastic record in this race and he looks sure to have been aiming this juvenile at this race all season. A steady horse on the flat, she’s progressed nicely over hurdles without being given a hard time in all three starts. A mark of 123 looks very lenient and this strong gallop over 2m will suit her well here. I think she’ll be bang there in first-time cheekpieces which can hopefully just sharpen her jumping up a touch.

The final selection comes in the finale, the National Hunt Challenge Cup over the 3m6f trip.

It is TRANSMISSION (9/2) for me here. Neil Mulholland is a good target trainer and he looks to have been lining up Transmission for this. He has followed a similar preparation to his Ultima winner The Druid’s Nephew. He was a good winner here at Cheltenham in November and he looks sure to relish this marathon trip as he’s a strong stayer. He was then a good second to Haiti Couleurs before running in the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle just to keep him ticking over and to protect this chase mark. Patrick Mullins takes the ride and hopefully, he can win it again despite the professionals now being allowed to ride in this contest.
