Aintree Day 2 Betting Tips for Ladies Day on Friday 14th April 2023

Aintree tips

Our Aintree Friday tips covers all seven races on the card and we are now just one day away from the 2023 Grand National, where 40 horses will go to post in the best horse race of the year.

Before that, it is time for Ladies Day at Aintree and Ciaran has been through the seven race card with a preview and tip for each race. Our Aintree Ladies Day tips start with the 1.45pm race and runs all the way through to the last race of the day at 5.15pm.

Aintree Ladies Day Tips

1.45pm – BRONN (7/2 with Bet Victor)

2.20pm – FENNOR CROSS (11/1 with bet365)

2.55pm – FOUND A FIFTY (7/2 with Betfred)

3.30pm – PIC D’ORHY (9/4 with bet365)

4.05pm – FINAL ORDERS (10/1 with BetUK)

4.40pm – IROKO (6/1 with BetVictor)

5.15pm – GLAN (12/1 with bet365)

1.45 Mildmay Novice Chase (3m)

A weak renewal of the 3m novice chase, won last year by Ahoy Senor. While favourites have a fairly good record in the race, it hasn’t been won by an Irish trainer since 2011. I was really disappointed by Gerri Colombe at Cheltenham and while plenty have crabbed the ride by Jordan Gainsford, having watched the race back, I am of the belief that the horse didn’t have the pace to keep up with what wasn’t a blistering gallop. The softening conditions will be in his favour but at Even money, there are too many question marks for me. A chance is taken on BRONN (7/2 with Bet Victor) who ran a career best at Cheltenham and doesn’t need to improve too much more to reverse placings with the favourite.

2.20 William Hill Handicap Hurdle (2m 4f)

Camprond is your favourite and it’s easy to see why. He was in receipt of a poor ride at Cheltenham in the Coral Cup, with Aidan Coleman kicking for home plenty soon enough. While he followed up a similar run after last year’s festival by winning at Punchestown, he had been dropped 3 pounds whereas this year, he has gone up 5. Although he is a horse I like, his price is also prohibitive.

Rachel Blackmore is an eye-catching jockey booking on the likable mare Martello Sky who will be suited by the softening ground and who was being Love Envoi in her last outing. I would also respect the chances of 6 Year Old Sonigino who is progressive and was raised just one pound for his Huntington win. However, my vote goes to FENNOR CROSS (11/1 with bet365) who was deemed worthy of a run in the Supreme by John McConnell, having won the Trial at the Cheltenham November meeting. With Ben Harvey taking 5 off, he effectively runs here off 128 and I have no doubt that he is better than that mark. If any form of Good remains in the description, he will go very close.

2.55 Poundland Top Novice Hurdle (2m)

Again, this is far from a Vintage Grade 1. Third favourite Luccia is surely priced purely on reputation, with the form of the Mares Novice Hurdle having taken a huge knock at Fairyhouse. Inthepocket is a classy horse but the Supreme to me proved that he needs a step up in trip and I’m amazed that he isn’t running in the 2-and-a-half-mile race. FOUND A FIFTY (7/2 with Betfred) has been improving all season and a short-head defeat by Corbetts Cross last time out was no disgrace. He was mentioned by Gordon at the start of the year as one to follow and I think that he has found a perfect opportunity to make good on that promise.

No Looking Back (14/1 with bet365) is a rare English runner for Ollie Mckiernan and he was only a length behind Irish Point last time out, giving that horse 9 pounds. With 4 places on offer with Bet 365, at 14/1 he is worth a small each way poke.

Bet on Found a Fifty with a £40 welcome bonus at Betfred.

3.30 Melling Chase (2m 4f)

Fakir D’Oudaries goes for 3 in a row but has looked regressive this year and despite being only 8, he has plenty of miles on the clock. Hitman ran a very good race in the Ryanair but that was just 4 weeks ago and it may have left a mark. Harry Cobden has also opted to switch his allegiance to PIC D’ORHY (9/4 with bet365) and I am going to do likewise. He beat 2 of these rivals (Fakir and Millers Bank) when 2nd to Shiskin at Ascot last time was unbeaten up to that run this year. He had valid excuses for a poor run at Aintree this time last year and I think he is a fair price to atone for that run here.

4.05 Topham Handicap Chase (2m 5f)

Friday’s spin over the Grand National fences is the 2-and-a-half-mile Topham chase, the Grand National Light. Those who either won’t stay or won’t get into the main event take their chance in this contest. In the last 5 renewals, Colin Tizzard and Willie Mullins have 2 wins each. The former stable send out Killer Kane who has disappointed having been bought for £300,000 but if the national fences can spark some improvement, is a fair price at 33/1. Willie Mullins saddles the top 3 in the weights and while Paul Townend is on Haut en Couleurs, I prefer the chances of Ciel De  Neige who will appreciate a bit of cut in the ground and who is partnered by Mark Walsh who has proven in the last 2 nationals that he knows how to ride the course.

Ultimately, I have come down on the side of Gavin Cromwell’s highly progressive 7 year old FINAL ORDERS (10/1 with BetUK) who prior to Cheltenham had put together 5 successive wins, over trips varying from 2m to 3m. He clearly has the pace to travel, stays and jumps well and has Keith Donoghue in the plate. He was staying on well in the Grand Annual so this trip should see him to best effect.

4.40 Sefton Novice Hurdle (3m)

Stay Away Fay is surprisingly declared here despite Paul Nicholls having previously indicated that he would skip Aintree and head straight to Punchestown. For me, there was no fluke about his win in what I believe will turn out to be a vintage renewal. Plenty were impressed by the way Absolute Notions stayed on over 2m 6f at the DRF but it wouldn’t be like Gordon to leave a Cheltenham winner at home and so I have to believe SAF has him covered. His biggest challenge may come from fellow Cheltenham scorer IROKO (6/1 with BetVictor) who is sure to relish the step up in trip. I loved the way he battled to win the Martin Pipe and he is one to keep in side here and going forward to a chasing campaign next year.

5.15 Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle (2m)

Aidan Kelly and JP McManus teamed up to win the Martin Pipe on the aforementioned Iroko and they may repeat the dose here on the Gordon Elliot trained GLAN (12/1 with bet365). 4th in a Galway Hurdle last year, she does have to overcome long absence but she will have the assistance of who I believe is the joint best (along with Mikey O’Sullivan) conditional rider in Ireland.

Her biggest challenge may come from JPR One who ran a cracker at 150/1 in last year’s supreme and had a nice pipe opener at Taunton last time out. A mark of 131 surely underestimates his ability.
