1:55 Aintree
The first selection comes in the Mersey Novices Hurdle, a Grade 1 over 2m4f.
I like HORACES PEARL (6/1) in this race, who has done nothing but improve. He was unbeaten in three bumpers last season, which ended with a decent victory at this meeting last year. He’s taken to hurdles very well and has maintained his unbeaten status with two decent victories this season. This is a decent step up, of course, but I think he’ll be up to it. This promising sort will relish the quick conditions too.
2:30 Aintree
Now Myretown is a NR, this is now a competitive race with chances potentially being made for a few. My fancy has now shot to the top of the market following the favourite coming out and that’s IMPERIAL SAINT (6/1). Having been kept busy throughout the autumn/winter (6 runs this season) he arrives here fresh, having run in the graded Pendil Novices’ Chase last time out, 42 days ago.
My mount is back into handicap company today, having run well in a competitive handicap at Cheltenham on trials day. His prior start was a winning one at this course, and I think he can add another 1 to his figures today. A theme of today seems to be backing horses stepping up in trip and that’s what this horse is doing as well. His 6 races have been over 2 or 2 ½ miles, so this 3m1f trip will be a test,t but I believe it’s one he will relish.
3:05 Aintree
The 3:05 is the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle for the stayers over 3 miles.
I think BUDDY ONE (25/1) looks overpriced in this. He ran respectably in the Stayers Hurdle last time out, finishing a solid 5th, staying on well. This track will suit him better as he showed when finishing a good second in this race last year. He’ll enjoy the ground and he’s only 8 so he certainly shouldn’t be on the downgrade.
4:00 Aintree
The Grand National comes up at 4:00 and it’s a classy renewal of the big handicap.
The one for me is IROKO (8/1). This has been the target all season and there is no doubt he’s a well handicapped horse based on what we’ve seen. I think he’ll relish this extra distance too as he looks to be full of stamina. That’ll bring out further improvement. He jumps well, he travels well and he should be a pretty uncomplicated ride for Jonjo O’Neill. He has enough pace to get a decent position early which is crucial these days and I think he’s the one they all have to beat.
