12:45 Kempton
The first of five live races from Kempton is the 12:45, a novice handicap chase over 2m4f.
The one I like here is GENERAL MEDRANO (11/2). The six year-old has relished going chasing this season winning his first two starts over the larger obstacles at Uttoxeter and Huntingdon. They were over 2m but he stepped up to 2m4f last time out and ran arguably his best race finishing a 2 length second to Brave Kingdom. He had to give weight to the winner there and the winner has since went in again at Newbury. He looks sure to go well again and could continue on the upward curve.
1:05 Aintree
We head to Aintree for their first Boxing Day fixture and ITV are showing the 1:05 race. It is the Formby Novices Hurdle (Known as the Tolworth), a Grade 1 over the extended 2 miles.
The horse I fancy is JANGO BAIE (10/3). A talking horse before his debut, he duly obliged when winning at Ascot. The close second that day who now re-opposes Tellherthename has boosted that form but I find it hard to see that form being reversed here. The selection looked green and looked like he’d improve a ton for the racecourse experience. There will be a decent gallop on here so I’m hopeful Nico will be able to get him settled on what will likely be a decent test at the trip on rain softened ground. If he does settle well, he’s already shown he has a willing attitude and I think he’ll be tough to beat.
1:20 Kempton
It’s back to Kempton for the first of three Grade 1’s. First up is the Kauto Star Novices Chase over 3m.
I like GIOVINCO (5/2) NAP here. He looked a top novice hurdler last season that would make an even better chaser. He was unlucky to unseat on debut at Carlisle and he put that right when winning at Aintree carrying a big weight in November. He then went to Sandown and went up against Stay Away Fay from the Nicholls yard. He traded odds on there but just got outstayed up the Sandown hill. Stay Away Fay is the best novice chaser in the country so that’s not a bad piece of form. This sharper test will suit him better and the ground will be ideal.
1:35 Wetherby
We head to Wetherby for one race and it’s the Rowlands Meyrick Handicap Chase over 3 miles.
It’s INTO OVERDRIVE (10/3) here for me. A winner of this contest 12 months ago, he’s a dual winner here at Wetherby and has a fine strike-rate over the larger obstacles winning of his 9 starts. He didn’t run upto form at the Cheltenham Festival when we last seen him but he’s had a nice break since and I’m sure this has been the target. He’ll enjoy any soft in the description and I’d be confident this 8 year-old can resume improvement back in a race of this nature at a course he loves.
1:55 Kempton
The 1:55 is the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle over the 2 mile trip.
It’s not a betting race but I’d look for a price on Constitution Hill to win by over 10 lengths as there is nothing in here that looks Grade 1 level.
2:30 Kempton
The Boxing Day feature is the King George VI Chase, a Grade 1 for the staying chasers over 3 miles. It’s a fascinating renewal of the race.
Any of these are capable of winning if showing their best but every runner has a concern or two about them. That’s why I’d be happy to leave the front of the market alone and take a shot at one of the outsiders.
The one of me is THE REAL WHACKER (9/1). This test looks right up his street if on a going day. He’s a slick jumper who gets into a lovely racing rhythm and this sharp 3 mile test at Kempton on decent ground looks ideal. He finished lame on seasonal debut at Cheltenham and has a lot to prove on the basis of that. However, he improved considerably from seasonal return last season and I’m hopeful he can do the same here. Patrick Neville is really happy with him and his novice chase form of last season has a real strong look to it. At the prices, he’s the one for me.
3:05 Kempton
The finale comes up at 3:05 and it is a 2 mile maiden hurdle.
It’s MOON CHIME (9/4) NB I like. An impressive winner on his first two bumper starts at Worcester and Stratford, he then went to Cheltenham and ran well finishing third a close third behind Brechin Castle. He shown a lot of speed is his bumpers so this test should suit him well. The return to quick ground looks an obvious plus too. He has the best bumper form in the line-up and if he can jump well, he’ll be the one to beat in my book.
