Breeders Cup 2023 Day 2 Betting Tips on Saturday 4th November
We look ahead to the Breeders Cup action where we preview the four Group 1 Turf races and the Breeders Cup Classic on the dirt.
7:10 Santa Anita
The 7:10 contest is the Group 1 Filly & Mares Turf over the 1m2f distance.
It’s WARM HEART (3/1) NAP for me here. She has a nice draw in stall 2 and she is likely to go forward and make this a decent test given she has Group 1 winning form over further. Inspiral is in stall 6 and will likely try and stalk her rival. However, she’ll need luck in running and she can be keen so there have to be a few question marks over 1m2f. Ryan Moore is a master in these tactical battles and he has the ideal draw to adopt his favoured tactics. Warm Heart is progressing rapidly and is on a serious upward curve. I think she can continue to improve. She’s a consistent hardy sort and is more reliable than rival Inspiral. I don’t think any of the other opposition are up to their standard.
8:30 Santa Anita
At 8:30, we have the Group 1 Breeders Cup Mile on the turf.
It’s MAWJ (3/1) for me here. The 1000 Guineas winner returned to action at Keeneland last month with another victory to make it four on the bounce. She had a mid-season setback so shell come on plenty for that effort. Two victories at Meydan earlier in the season over this trip tell us she will have no problem with the firm ground here. She’s comfortably the best horse in the line-up and her three main rivals are all drawn outside her which has to be a negative for them.
9:50 Santa Anita
The Group 1 Breeders Cup Turf comes up at 9:40, a fascinating renewal of the 1m4f contest.
It’s MOSTAHDAF (3/1) NB I’ve landed on here. He comes here off the back of his two career best efforts winning at Royal Ascot showing a potent turn of foot to land the Prince Of Wales Stakes in style. That was over the trip but he dropped to 1m2f to then go on and win the Juddmonte International at York from the front in gutsy fashion. He relishes quick ground which he gets today and he comes here fresher than most which is key. Victory in Saudi Arabia in February tells us he has no problem with the travel either which is an obvious plus.
10:45 Santa Anita
The Breeders Cup Classic is next up, arguably the main race of the weekend for many. It is is a Group 1 race on the dirt over 1m2f.
It’s USHBA TESORO (9/2) for me in the Classic. The Japanese horses are better than ever in recent times and they are constantly producing worldwide superstars. Ushba Tesoro is on his way to joining that list. Since making the switch to dirt, he’s won 7 of his 8 starts. He came from last to first to win the Dubai World Cup over this trip at Meydan back in March and I’d be confident he’d get a similar strong pace to aim at again here. He’s the back horse in the race on paper and he’s a very fair price in my opinion.
11:25 Santa Anita
The final race we look at is the 11:25 race. It is the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint over 5 furlongs.
It’s MOTORIOUS (8/1) for me here. He’s a previous course and distance winner here back in March which is always a good starting point in a race of this nature. 5f races around a bend aren’t for every horse. He has had two runs since, firstly a respectable second-placed effort in May at Churchill Downs before landing a Group 3 at Del Mar in September. He has shown a decent turn of foot there and that effort should put him spot on for this. He’s one who won’t get involved in the early hot pace that will be on here and I’m hoping that will give him a lovely toe into it. He’s a consistent sort and it’s hard to see him finishing out the frame under ideal conditions.
