1.30pm – Ballymore Novices Hurdle
An absolute cracker to get day 2 started. Any of the top 5 could win with 3 horses coming into this on the back of a Grade 1 win. Added to that is another graded success and a top-weighted carrying performance in a DRF handicap.
I’ve been on IMPAIRE ET PASSE since his debut performance in December (read week 9 of my Ante Post tips) and there’s no way I will be turning my back on him now. 10 days ago he was neck and neck with Hermes Allen in the betting but with (what seems like) about 200 strong mentions throughout the preview night scene, he is a clear 7/4 fav now. The confidence coming out the Mullins yard over the last few days on this lad is frightening. To be this short in a field like this takes some doing, especially when the form of his wins isn’t a clear standout.
He flew through the ground on debut in Naas when horses in every other race were crawling home and won the SkyBet Moscow Flyer hurdle on heavy ground less than a month later. I thought he was some weapon on both starts and I hope he improves further and storms up that Cheltenham hill.
There are very good horses in this race and Hermes Allen, Gaelic Warrior, Good Land and Champ Kiely all have the form on the track and the right connections to be competitive here but it will be a race for 2nd as they look at Impaire Et Passe’s behind stretching clear. I wouldn’t put anyone off having an EW bet on the one 5th in the betting though in Champ Kiely. 8/1 represents good value on him.
2.10pm – Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase
Next up on Day 2 is the Brown Advisory Novice Chase over an extended 3 miles.
Conditions have come right for GERRI COLOMBE (13/8) and he can maintain his unbeaten sequence here. He will relish the soft ground and this step up to 3m looks a move that looks certain to bring out further improvement. He’s a straightforward horse who jumps well and has displayed a good attitude throughout his career to date. Sir Gerhard is a danger but he comes here off the back of one chase run and that was over 2m. He just can’t be fancied based on that. The Real Whacker should run well but I’d expect there to be one or two in here that are classier than him. He’ll give Gerri Colombe a lovely toe into this race I imagine.
4.50pm – Grand Annual
I hope the day goes well enough to not have to have an escape plan out of here, but that won’t stop me backing ANDY DUNFRESE (6/1 with bet365) in this race. ‘Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies’ In other words back the JP good thing in the handicap.
Now I know there are 2 of them at the top of the market but as this race has a strong trend in winners having ran in the race the previous year, there’s only one place to look. Sent off the 10/3f last year, he only found 1 too good for him and just fell short of giving the winner 19lb.
His form this season is nothing to write home about but this would have been the target all year and you can forget everything he has done during the Autumn/Winter. He has to carry top weight again and it’s not going to be easy but after running well on that bottomless ground last year, he is sure to cope with the ground this year. There’s no stand out performer here and I think Andy Dufresne has a great chance. Dads Lad is one I fear and I believe he is a great EW price, although he won’t want the ground too soft.
5.30pm – Champion Bumper
The finale on Day 2 is the Weatherby’s Champion Bumper with 24 runners set to line-up with Willie Mullins set to field ten of them.
I’ve landed on one of Willie’s and it is FACT TO FILE (5/1). He won his bumper debut over 2m4f showing he was all stamina to get back up close to home. He then went to Leopardstown and finished second behind the current favourite A Dream To Share beaten just under 3L. However, that was more of a speed test and this race is going to be the totally opposite in my opinion. Fact To File will be staying on stronger than any and he looks set to relish the hill on soft ground. He is the choice of Patrick Mullins which is a positive and I think JP McManus bought A Dream To Share because he knows Fact Or File is a real good one too.
