Cheltenham Day 2 Each-Way Lucky 15 Tips – Four Bets for a Wednesday Lucky 15
One down, three to go and, with supposedly ‘good things’ in at least three of the seven races on Wednesday’s card, we’ve scoured far and wide for value-for-money selections on this lucky 15 tip.
The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle kicks things off at 1.20pm wher Bob Olinger is the current favourite but it looks like a competitive race. Monkfish is a short priced favourite in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase and Chacan Poir Soi is another short priced favourite in the feature race of the day.
With that in mind, we have looked for extra value with our lucky 15 tips here and these four picks would all be advised as each-way bets.
2.30pm – Coral Cup: Guard Your Dreams
The Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle (2:30) is about as impenetrable as they come, but our ‘sporting’ selection is Guard Your Dreams (14/1 with Bet365), who has won three of his five starts and was far from disgraced when a never-nearer sixth, beaten 7 lengths, in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury last month. Still only a 5-year-old, he has his stamina to prove on his first attempt over 2 miles 5 furlongs, but his style of racing suggests that, if anything, he could improve again for stepping up in distance. He has won on good to soft, soft and heavy going, so should run his race whatever the weather at Prestbury Park between now and Wednesday afternoon.
3.05pm – Queen Mother Champion Chase: First Flow
In the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase (3:05), Chacun Pour Soi is the obvious one, granted that he officially has 5lb and upwards in hand of his rivals. However, although he has won around Punchestown, there is no guarantee that he will act on the undulations of Prestbury Park and, at a short price, may be worth taking on with First Flow (12/1 with Bet365). Kim Bailey’s 9-year-old has won seven of his eleven starts over fences, including the last six in a row, and took his form to a new level when beating Politologue by 7 lengths, at level weights, in the Grade One Clarence House at Ascot in January. A reproduction of that form would give him every chance and he is, frankly, too big a price to resist.
4.15 – Grand Annual: Ibelo
In the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (4:15), Ibleo (14/1 with Bet365) proved no match for Sky Pirate on the New Course here in December and, on just 1b better terms for 3¾ lengths, appears to have his work cut out to reverse the form. However, Venetia Williams’ 8-year-old has since improved to win at Sandown and Warwick, while Sky Pirate was put firmly in his place by Allmankind in the Grade Two Kingmaker Novices’ Chase at Warwick last month. Ibleo has done all his winning of soft or heavy going, so probably doesn’t want the ground to dry out too much, but otherwise boasts solid credentials; his yard is in pretty good nick, too.
4.50pm- Champion Bumper: Three Stripe Life
As ever, the Weatherbys Champion Bumper (4:50) is choc-a-bloc with unexposed talent. Willie Mullins, with five runners, including the three highest-rated in the field, holds an extraordinarily strong hand, but the Leading Light gelding Three Stripe Life (13/2 with Bet365) boasts a formidable combination of stamina and speed in his pedigree. Now in the care of Denise Foster, Three Stripe Life won easily, by 9 lengths, on his debut at Navan in January and, although that form has yet to be fully tested, he is clearly a smart recruit.
