Cheltenham Festival 2022 – Do’s and Don’ts
The Cheltenham Festival is the ultimate event in National Hunt racing and every year the pilgrimage takes place to the racecourse, but what will 2021 have in store for racegoers?
At this time, we don’t even know if crowds will be allowed into the famous racecourse in March but whether you can or can’t go on course, our Cheltenham Festival do’s and don’ts guide will still help you to have the most enjoyable four days wherever you watch the action from.
Prestbury Park is the mecca of horse racing for so many fans, but how can you ensure you make the most of the Cheltenham Festival?
Do’s
- Get the day off Work, Lay the foundations today with your colleagues that you’re not feeling well so they won’t suspect why your MIA tomorrow.
- Be well-rested, get a good night’s sleep Monday night, so you can attack Day 1 in the right frame of mind.
- Have an early morning walk to the shops, to get the paper and any other essentials you may need to finalise your selections before heading down to the pub or setting up your den at home.
- Have a good breakfast, this will give you plenty of soakage for the day ahead and fuel the Brain.
- Get down to the pub early to get your seat and avoid the spoofers at the counter still talking shite about Annie Powers fall…
- Be confident with your selections, you’ve done the study, you’ve watched previews, podcasts etc.. now is not the time to 2nd guess yourself.
- Get the winner of the first this will set you up for the rest of the day or even a small profit so your feeling good about heading into the 2nd race.
- Follow your usual betting strategy, if that’s just a €1 lucky 15 or a patent, you do you.
- Only gamble what you can afford to lose no need to do stupid bets just to impress your mates.
- Look at the different specials bookies are offering, a lot of bookies offer money back on certain races, this could save you a few quid, get you that bag of chips before heading home to the missus to tell her how much you won.
Don’ts
- Only bet in the Grade 1s, an each way play in the Handicaps could save the day and could provide an opportunity for a tasty profit if you find the winner or even a place at a decent price.
- Listen to tips from untrustworthy sources, these lads can generally be found shouting loudly around the pub or bookies using the line “My friend was talking to one of the Head Lads in Mullins, he said its a machine”.
- Have a bet for the sake of it, no point throwing away money just to feel included, if you don’t fancy anything, don’t bet!!
- Avoid the smaller meetings, often during Cheltenham, winners can be got much easier at other meetings, don’t miss out…
- Give tips to family or close friends that don’t usually have a punt, they come out of the woodwork every year around this time and just want stone wall certainties, If they get beat they’ll slate you to everyone including the Mother.
- Choose a different pub to watch the races, you don’t know what you’ll encounter elsewhere, i.e (Quality of Guinness, clientele and food given out) grass is not always greener on the other side.
- Go mad on Day 1, this is a marathon not a sprint, don’t blow the budget in the first 3 races.
- Bet more than you can afford to lose, remember to keep within your limits, life continues after these epic 4 days of racing.
- Change your routine, you’ll feel more confident with your selections and in control of future events.
- Forget to get the first round in, that way you’ll get 3 races without putting your hand in your pocket and you can concentrate on getting a winner on the board.
