National Hunt Chase – Nick Rockett
It’s a guess at this current time but I think that Patrick will end up riding NICK ROCKETT. Although at the time of writing, he’s not qualified yet (needs to run over 3m), I think this will be his target and he’s one I would really fancy in the race. He has form over the shorter trip and was impressive when winning a Grade 2 at Fairyhouse at Easter.
He lined up in probably the hottest beginners chase this season on chasing debut and didn’t lose anything in defeat (Paul Townend may have wanted to have that ride again) in behind Corbetts Cross, Three Card Brag and Monty’s Star. He won an easier contest at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day and looks like one that will come on again on his next start. He has won on good/soft and heavy so ground shouldn’t be a problem.
Brown Advisory Novices Chase – Fact to File
FACT TO FILE is a 7-year-old who was runner-up in the Champion Bumper last season. Very interestingly, he completely skipped a hurdle campaign, something that people are referring to as the “Florida Pearl” Route in reference to Willie’s King George winning chaser who did likewise.
However, that was in 1999 and I don’t remember too many in the meantime who the trainer felt could do likewise. Willie has made little effort to hide the fact that he sees this horse as a future Gold Cup winner and despite being beaten on his first start this season, given that it was his first racecourse outing over any sort of obstacle, I am willing to forgive him for that.
He is on a severe upward curve and at Christmas, his jumping was visibly improving as the race progressed. In his Novice campaign, Florida Pearl won the 2m 5f Race at the Dublin Racing Festival equivalent of the time before going on to win this race at the Cheltenham Festival and Fact to File repeated that when beating Gaelic Warrior in a match. The figures back up this opinion as he has also recorded the highest RPR and time form rating of anyone in the betting (with Il Est Francais very unlikely to show up).
Ryanair Chase – Stage Star
STAGE STAR is a dual course/distance winner and was the winner of the Turners Novices Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. He then won the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November on reappearance off a hefty weight to push him towards the top of the betting and lay down a marker for the race. That is strong form with 4th place Fugituf then taking the December Gold Cup 4 weeks later. He has since drifted in the market due to being pulled up at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day when trying to give lumps of weight to the field. I think that was a big ask and after his trainer Paul Nichols hinted in November that he could go straight to the Festival, this race was almost an afterthought. With that considered I’d be happy to write off that run.
He has the right profile for the race and if he can repeat his performance in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November then it will take a good one to beat him.
Mares Novice Hurdle – Brighterdaysahead
BRIGHTERDAYSAHEAD is an extremely well-bred mare, a half-sister to French Dynamite, Mighty and Caldwell Potter (now the most expensive jumps horse ever sold). Undefeated in 5 racecourse outings, she has won her 3 hurdle starts by a combined 27 lengths. She trounced an admittedly under-par Jetara by 45 lengths in Down Royal, and on her latest start, her jumping was much slicker than it had been on her 2 previous outings achieving an RPR figure of 142 and putting in the best time performance of the day. That win over 2m 5f again proves that the stamina test of the new course will hold no fears while her high cruising speed will be suited by the likely high tempo of the race.
Gordon Elliot has been effusive in his praise for her and indicated that due to a slight setback, he expects her to progress from her latest run. If that’s the case, Jade De Grugy will have to be very special to beat her and while that is not outside the bounds of possibility, at a slightly bigger price of 3/1, and with the extra run under her belt, I am backing Gordon to bag his first winner of the race and put the money back in the Sponsors pockets.
