Glorious Goodwood 2024 Day 1 Tips for Tuesday 30th July
1:50 Goodwood
The first race of the Glorious Goodwood meeting is the competitive Chesterfield handicap over 1m2f.
I’m happy to chance KILLYBEGS WARRIOR (16/1) EW here for the Charlie Johnston stable. I’m hopeful he can bounce back in first time head-gear as the yards often do with winning jockey Kevin Stott back in the saddle. This is a track the yard excel at and from stall 6, the selection will be able to obtain a nice handy position. If on a going day, he’s capable of running a big race off a falling handicap mark.
2:25 Goodwood
The 2:25 is the Group 2 Vintage Stakes over the 7f trip for 2 year-olds.
It’s AN OUTLAW’S GRACE (11/2) for me here. The Richard Hannon 2 year-old was a good winner on debut at Salisbury and followed that up with a very respectful 4th at Group 2 level in France. He’ll have learnt a lot from that run and this race might well be a weaker race for the Grade. He looks solid here for a yard that landed this race last year.
3:00 Goodwood
Next up is the Lennon Stakes, another Group 2 contest over 7f but this time, it’s the turn of the elders.
I like the improving ENGLISH OAK (7/2) NAP here who looks upto this level. He’s on a serious upward curve and bolted up at Ascot when we last seen him in the competitive Buckingham Palace Handicap. I don’t see why he wouldn’t be up to this level and he’s on an upward curve whilst the likes of Kinross have to be regressing now.
3:35 Goodwood
The feature race is the Goodwood Cup at 3:35, a Group 1 race for the stayers over 2 miles.
I’ll chance GREGORY (9/1) in this here. He was a progressive 3 year-old last season that included a victory here at Goodwood last year. He made a highly encouraging seasonal debut in the Yorkshire Cup before disappointing in the Gold Cup. I’m happy to forgive him and give him another chance at the prices.
4:10 Goodwood
The finalto cover todaty is a wide-open 5f handicap.
It’s course and distance winner FAIR WIND (7/2) for me here. He could well be better than a handicapper and he showed a potent turn of foot to win easily at Ascot last time out. The 4 year-old is still progressing and if he gets the gaps here, he has to go close in handicap company.
