Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips – Tuesday 27th July 2021
The five day Glorious Goodwood meeting gets underway on Tuesday with Stradivarius the biggest name in action. That comes in the Goodwood Cup, due off at 3.35pm which is one of eight races on the day 1 card.

1:50 Goodwood
The opener on Day 1 is the Chesterfield Cup handicap. A tricky start for punters as 18 runners are set to go to post for this 1m2f affair.
My selection is MAJESTIC DAWN EW (8/1). A track that offer favours front runners he likes to go forward and the drawn on the rail in stall 1 means he is in the perfect position to adopt those tactics here. A 50/1 winner for us when he won the Cambridgeshire last season he’s a horse I’ve always thought a lot of. He has form on a slow surface and the Cole team are starting to hit form with a 25% strike rate in the last 14 days. I think he can run a big race on his second start of the season.
2:25 Goodwood
The second race today is the Unibet Vintage Stakes, a Group 2 contest over the 7f trip for 2 year-olds.
The one for me here is THE ACROPOLIS NB (6/1). He improved for his debut fourth to win a maiden well on his next start at Listowel. He has been disappointing in his last two starts including when finishing 5l behind market leader here Berkshire Shadow in the Coventry, but I think he prefers some cut in the ground which he’ll get here today. The step up in trip looks the right move too and this son of Churchill can resume improvement here under ideal conditions and go close at a nice price.
3:00 Goodwood
The 3:00 race is the Lennox Stakes, a Group 2 over the 7f distance. Godolphin hold a strong hand here with Space Blues and Creative Force heading the market.
The one I like is SPACE BLUES NAP (5/2). Winner of this race last year he has really strong form over this 7f trip. He won his last five starts of the 2020 campaign and yes he was disappointing back in March at Meydan but he’s been off since which suggests something must have been amiss there. If he’s anywhere near his best form, he’ll win this and I’m happy to chance that he will be back to his best given he’s trained by a genius in Charlie Appleby.
3:35 Goodwood
The feature on the opening day is the Group 1 Goodwood Cup for the stayers over the 2m trip. Stradivarius heads the market at the time of writing but continues to drift like a barge in the market.
I think TRUESHAN (9/4) can win this. Connections have been waiting for the ground to come right for him as he likes a soft surface and he’ll finally get that today. Last time he got his belovered soft ground, he was mightily impressive in winning on Champions Day at Ascot last October. I think he can return to that level of form here back under his ideal conditions with Hollie Doyle on board.
4:10 Goodwood
The final race live on ITV is a 5f handicap. Bound to be plenty of hard luck stories on this unique track of Goodwood I’d advise small stakes in this one.
My selection is ONLY SPOOFING EW (11/1). Bound to be loads of pace on here I fancy one to come through from off the pace and get up close home. Only Spoofing fits that bill and he has strong consistent form over 5f. He has been here to Goodwood only once and won that contest so hopefully, he can back that up and make it 2-2 over this unique course and distance. Tom Marquand is a positive jockey booking.
