Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips 2022 – Tuesday 26th July

Glorious Goodwood day 1 betting tips for Tuesday 26th July with a preview and betting tip for each of the races live on ITV Racing. Henry has been through each of the six live races and given us his best bet for each.

The action gets underway at 1.50pm and the big race of the day is the Goodwood Cup at 3.35pm, where racing royalty Stradivarius could be making his last ever appearance. Kyprios beat him at Royal Ascot and will be looking to do the same again here.

 

1:50 Goodwood

The opener to start the Glorious Goodwood meeting is a competitive affair, the Chesterfield Cup handicap ran over 1m2f.

The one for me is BRILLIANT LIGHT (7/1) EW. A decent winner at Ripon back in May, he’s backed that up with two fine efforts in competitive races at Ascot and York. He remains off a mark of 96 and on all known form he has to go close. Stall 2 should give Tudhope the chance to get a nice prominent position to avoid any hard luck stories.

 

2:25 Goodwood

The 2:25 race is the Vintage Stakes, a Group 2 contest for 2 year-olds over the 7f trip.

I really like HOLLOWAY BOY (2/1) NAP here. A winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on his racecourse debut, that takes a serious effort on your first start. He looked like a proper 2 year-old in the parade ring that day and despite showing signs of greenness, he still managed to get his head in front. I don’t think this is as strong as that race and you’d expect further improvement on just his second career start.

 

3:00 Goodwood

Next up we have the Lennon Stakes, another Group 2 over 7f but one for all ages.

I’ll chance SANDRINE (12/1) EW here. She was a top 2 year-old last season running in all the right races. Her 3 year-old campaign has seen her run in 3 Group 1s and not disgraced in any of them. However, I think this drop in trip could see her to best effect and this is also obviously a drop down in grade. She’s a nice each-way price in an open contest.

 

3:35 Goodwood

The feature comes up at 3:35, it is the Group 1 Goodwood Cup Stakes over 2m.

I think COLTRANE (10/1) EW can at least hit the frame at a nice enough price here. He is the real improver in the line-up winning at Royal Ascot before a career best at Sandown last time out. He will likely get his own way out in front and make this is a real test as he’s proven over further. I can see him hanging on for a place at least here.

 

4:10 Goodwood

The 4:10 is a trappy handicap over the unique 5f dash at Goodwood.

I like EQUALITY (13/2) NB here for the Charlie Hills team. A master with the sprinters, I don’t think we have seen the best of this horse yet. He travelled best in his race last time out at Ascot in a competitive affair but his challenge weakened in the closing furlong. This speedier 5f trip will definitely suit more and I am happy to chance him in this weaker race.

 

4:45 Goodwood

The final race on ITV comes up at 4:45 and it is a 6f race for the 2 year-old maidens over 6f.

Tough to be bullish here but I’ve landed on CELTIC CHAMPION (5/1) for the Andrew Balding stable. He was as green as grass on debut, missing the start before staying on strongly, getting the hands of things late on to finish third. His horses often improve greatly for the first start and the fact he’s bringing Celtic Champion here for this offers encouragement. I expect him to take a chunky step forward for the debut effort and go close here. Look at market vibes.
