Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips for Wednesday 31st July
1:50 Goodwood
The opener on Day 2 is a 1m4f handicap for the 3 year-olds.
The one I like here is FRENCH DUKE (11/2). He’s certainly improved from his 2 year-old campaign in two starts this season. The first of those efforts was a very close second in a competitive maiden at Newbury before running a career best to finish 6th in the King George handicap at Royal Ascot last time out. He caught the eye there and the fitting of a first-time hood can bring out further improvement. He looks like he has the potential to improve and could well be well-handicapped when things click. Hopefully, today is that day.
2:25 Goodwood
The 2:25 at Goodwood is the Oak Tree Hill Stakes, a Group 3 for the fillies and mares over 7f.
It is RAQIYA (7/1) NAP for me here. The Owen Burrows-trained filly was an impressive winner on seasonal return up at Salisbury at listed level suggesting she has potential to be a Group performer in time. She then went to York and despite finishing sixth in the Summer Stakes, she was only beaten 2 lengths so it was a solid effort. I think stepping up to 6f and the return to a quick surface could bring out further improvement. She’ll do for me in this open race.
3:00 Goodwood
Next up we have the Group 3 Molecombe Stakes for the 2 year-olds over the 5f trip.
I think VINGEGAARD (9/1) NB is the one to be with here. An impressive debut winner at Chepstow was followed up with a fine 5th at Royal Ascot in the Windsor Castle. He then went to the Super Sprint at Newbury and looked the winner most of the race before being collared close to home. I think this track will suit better and he sets a fair standard.
3:35 Goodwood
The feature is the Group 1 Sussex Stakes over the mile.
With Rosallion now out of the feature, I think this could set up well for HENRY LONGFELLOW (6/4). He is the likely pace angle and if Ryan Moore adopts similar tactics to what we saw at Ascot, he could steal it from the front. He was a star 2 year-old winning all three starts including at Group 1 level. He can be excused his effort in the French Guineas and he commands serious respect based on the Ascot run with the favourite now out. I think he’s now the best horse in this race and the race could prove to be better pretty straightforward for Ryan Moore.
