Haydock, Ascot and Kempton Betting Tips for ITV Racing on Saturday 7th September
1:15 Haydock
The first of five live races from Haydock starts at 1:15. We start with the Group 3 Superior Mile Stakes with 7 runners declared.
The horse I like here is HOLLOWAY BOY (11/2). A rare debut winner at Royal Ascot 2 years ago, he’s yet to get his head back in front since that Chesham win but there is optimism his time is near. He’s been hitting the bar in competitive handicaps of late and he did well to finish third last time out at York as the front two got first run on him. This isn’t the deepest of Group 3 races by any stretch of the imagination and with Williams Buick booked today, I expect him to go close.
1:35 Ascot
The first race from Ascot is the 1:35 and it is a 7f handicap.
It’s THE WIZARD OF EYE (5/1) I like here who returns to handicap company after finishing sixth at Group 1 level last time out. That wasn’t a bad effort by any means but this looks more like his cup of the. He was a good winner here at Ascot two starts back when landing the competitive Victoria Cup over this course and distance and it suits him well. A mark of 102 asks a tough question but under ideal conditions on a track and trip he loves, he’ll do for me.
1:50 Haydock
Next up is a 1m6f handicap at Haydock for the 3-year-olds.
It’s hard to get away from MASTER BUILDER (7/2) NAP here. He was well backed at big prices in the Melrose when we last seen him and he ran a cracker finishing third. We know that is a very competitive contest full of unexposed 3-year-olds and if he can build on that he looks a worthy favourite here. This is just his fifth career start so he’s still unexposed and I think that run last time out will have brought him on a lot mentally. Again, William Buick is booked to ride which is certainly no negative.
2:10 Ascot
We head back to Ascot for 2:10 contest. A competitive 3 year-old handicap over 1m4f.
The horse I like in this is SOLOMON (8/1). I was really taken by his victory at Haydock two starts ago where he duly bolted up and looked a horse going places. He then came here for a handicap over course and distance and things just didn’t go his way. He finished fifth that day but they went steady and it just didn’t suit him at all. I’d expect there to be a better gallop here and he can resume his improvement. A mark of 92 is lenient in my opinion.
2:25 Haydock
The 2:25 from Haydock is the competitive Old Borough Cup, a wide-open handicap over the 1m6f distance.
It’s IF NOT NOW (16/1) EW for me in this open race. The Ralph Beckett trained 4 year-old made an encouraging return to action finishing a good third in a competitive handicap at Lingfield on seasonal debut. He then went to Epsom and just didn’t seem to handle the track at all. Draw a line through that and the fact he’s been dropped 2lb for it is an added bonus. The yard is in rude form at present and I think he’s a better horse than a mark of 99.
2:35 Kempton
We have two races from Kempton. The 2:35 is the Group 3 September Stakes over 1m4f.
I think HAMISH (2/1) NB sets a high standard here and I’d have to expect a bold bid back down to Group 3 level. The previous course and distance winner has to give weight away here but if he ignore his run last time out, he’d be closer to evens here. That was a rare off day but before that he was a good winner at Newbury making that 5 wins on the spin before a fine second in the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom. Freshened up since the below-par effort back in July, I think he’ll take a lot of beating.
3:00 Haydock
The 3:00 from Haydock is a competitive handicap for the sprinters over 5f.
It’s LOOKING FOR LYNDA (11/2) here for me for the Karl Burke stable. He sneaks in this off bottom weight and will be well suited by this track and trip. Last seen finishing a close third in a traditional high-level handicap at a York at the Ebor meeting, this looks weaker and I think he can get back in the winners enclosure for the first time since last September.
3:15 Kempton
The 3:15 from Kempton is the London Mile Final, a competitive 14 runner handicap.
It has to be KILT (7/2) for me here. It is a good time of year for 3 year-olds to be taken on their elders given the experience they’ve gained throughout the season and the age for weight allowance and that is exactly what Kilt does here. The son of Kingman is progressing well. He was a winner at Newmarket in May before finishing sixth in a decent novice stakes contest next time out. I get the impression connections were slightly disappointed with that effort and that went on to get him gelded. He then was last seen making handicap debut at Haydock where he finished a very good second. I’d expect further improvement to follow and a mark of 92 could well underestimate him.
3:35 Haydock
The feature race of the day ends the ITV coverage and it’s the Group 1 Sprint Cup Stakes over 6 furlongs.
I’m going to chance JASOUR (9/1) EW here because he certainly can be a Group 1 horse, he just needs to learn to settle better in his races. He was ultra impressive when winning at listed level at Ascot on his return this season and that’s what he is capable of if settling well. He wasn’t disgraced when finishing 3rd and 6th in two Group 1s since and that was despite not settling. If he can settle, I’d expect a career-best with plenty of pace on here which will suit his style well. At the prices, he’s worth the risk.
