Horse Racing Tips: Best Bets for Thursday’s cards at Brighton, Carlisle, Chelmsford & Wincanton
There’s some competitive racing on Thursday, on the Flat at Brighton and Chelmsford and over Jumps at Carlisle and Wincanton.
We’ve highlighted what we believe are four value-for-money selections, one at each meeting.

Brighton: 5:05 Cazoo Handicap 7f
Dual course and distance winner Incorrigible failed to cope with a 6lb rise in the weights when only fourth at Ffos Las last time but, back in 0-65 grade, looks worth another chance. Indeed, the Oasis Dream filly was only beaten 1½ lengths in a competitive 0-70 affair at the West Wales course, suggesting her revised handicap mark is not beyond her. She has run well on all four starts at Brighton – where trainer Richard Hannon has a 25% strike rate in recent years – and, despite 9st 10lb, looks decent value.
Selection: Incorrigible (5/1 with Bet365)
Carlisle: 3:40 Racing TV Handicap Hurdle (Div I) 2m1f
Strong Team remains dangerously well-handicapped on his old form, but appeared to be beaten fair-and-square off today’s mark at Sedgefield last month and could prove vulnerable once again. Near Kettering hasn’t run over hurdles since easily winning a similar race at Market Rasen in mid-August, but has had three – albeit less-than-stellar – runs on the Flat in the interim. He should be cherry ripe for this and he’ll need to be to defy a 10lb rise in the weights, but looks worth a chance to confirm his earlier promise.
Selection: Near Kettering (13/2 with Bet365)
Chelmsford: 7:00 tote.co.uk Free Streaming Every UK Race Handicap 7f
Billy Mill has yet to run a bad race on synthetic surfaces, including Polytrack, and his most recent effort, in a similar race at Wolverhampton ten days ago, was his best yet. He can confirm the form with the fourth horse home, If You Dare, whom he meets on identical terms, and looks to have every chance of adding to his winning tally.
Selection: Billy Mill (11/2 with William Hill)
Wincanton: 2:55 MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase 3m1f
Friends Don’t Ask was the comfortable winner of a similar race at Uttoxeter last month and a 5lb rise in the weights for that victory looks entirely fair. Still only a 6-year-old, the Champs Elysees gelding has been quietly progressive of late, winning two of his last three starts under Nick Scholfield and, with conditions in his favour once again, he looks to have every chance of defying a career-high mark.
Selection: Friends Don’t Ask (9/2 with William Hill)
