Horse Racing Tips: Coral-Eclipse Ante-post Preview & Prediction
The Coral-Eclipse offers the first ‘kick at the can’ for three-year-olds of the ‘Classic’ generation against older rivals at the highest level.
Both age groups are well represented in what promises to be a fascinating and informative contest.
Mishriff has demonstrated his versatility
At the time of writing, Aidan O’Brien is responsible for three of the first four in the ante-post betting, but Mishriff, trained by John and Thady Gosden heads the market. Mishriff could only finish eighth of ten, beaten 11½ lengths, behind Addeybb in the Champion Stakes at Ascot last October, but has since won the Saudi Cup at Riyadh and the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan to take his career earnings to over £10 million. The son of Make Believe has demonstrated his versatility with regard to distance and going and, while he hasn’t been seen in public since March, the Coral-Eclipse has always been his first summer target.
St. Mark’s Basilica looks the Ballydoyle pick
Like Mishriff, the 3-year-old St. Mark’s Basilica has won both starts at the highest level this season, namely the Poule d’Essai des Poulains at Longchamp and the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, and is arguably the pick of the Ballydoyle entries. He has yet to win on going faster than ‘soft’, but wasn’t beaten far when third in the National Stakes, on good going, at the Curragh last September, so may not be entirely ground dependent. According to Aidan O’Brien, St. Mark’s Basilica is ‘in the mix’ for the Coral-Eclipse, with the Juddmonte International Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes also on the agenda.
