Horse Racing Tips for ITV Racing on Saturday 1st July from Newcastle and Newmarket

12:20 Newcastle
The opener on the AW is a 6f handicap with 9 runners set to go to post.
I do like RAATEA (11/4) here. A winner of this race last season off a 5lb higher mark, I think he’s improved since then suggesting the increased mark won’t be an issue. He was a good winner at Haydock last time out showing he’s in decent form and the stable are flying after a Group 1 winner last week for the same owners. Jason Hart is a good jockey booking and I think he’ll take a lot of beating here.
12:40 Newmarket
The first of three races from HQ is the Maureen Brittain Memorial Emprees Fillies Stakes, a listed contest over 6 furlongs.
I’d be happy to take on the favourite given the stable form and I’d take a punt on RARE JEWEL (16/1). Trainer William Haggas pitches this filly straight into listed company on her debut which has to be interesting suggesting her homework must have be pretty impressive. She’s bred to be very good out being an Exceed and Excel filly and in a race that doesn’t appear the strongest, I’d take a flyer.
12:55 Newcastle
It’s Group 3 action next from Newcastle with the Chipchase Stakes over 6f.
I like BRAD THE BRIEF (4/1) here. He’s the best of these on ratings and has run well when fresh in the past so I’d be confident he’ll go very close at least. He won on his reappearance last season and then managed to go and win at Group 2 level showing he’s more than capable at this level. This isn’t the strongest Group 3 by any stretch of the imagination. Oisin Murphy takes the ride which is a positive jockey booking of course and he’ll do for me here.
1:15 Newmarket
The 1:15 from Newmarket is the Fred Archer Stakes, another listed race, this time over 1m4f.
I like AL AASY (5/2) NB here. Favourite New London returns off a long break with a tongue tie fitted and fresh of a wind operation which has to be a concern. Al Aasy comes here off a break himself but he’s ran well when fresh before and he’s a proven performer at this level. He ran well of a break when winning when we last seen him at Ascot and I think he’ll be in the winners enclosure again today.
1:30 Newcastle
The 1:30 is the consolation race for the Northumberland Plate, it is the Northumberland Vase over the extended 2 miles.
It’s APPIER (5/1) for me here. He’s a horse in a rich vein of form and he won well from right off the pace at Lingfield last time out. He’s an improving 4 year-old and he’s capable of defying a 5lb penalty here I think. He has a lovely draw in stall 3 so should be able to obtain a nice easy position just behind the leaders and hopefully he’ll come with a winning run in the home straight.
1:50 Newmarket
The 1:50 race is the Criterion Stakes, a Group 3 race over 7f.
It’s BERKSHIRE SHADOW (9/2) here for me who brings solid Group 1 form to the table having run two crackers , firstly in the Lockinge finishing a close third before a good effort finishing 5th last time out in the Queen Anne at Ascot. A repeat of that effort has to put him bang there and I think he should be closer to the front two in the market here.
2:05 Newcastle
The feature ends proceedings at 2:05 and it is the Northumberland Plate again over the extended 2 miles.
It’s GOLDEN RULES (7/2) NAP. I think he’ll just adopt similar tactics to his easy victory last time out when bolting up at Kempton. He made all there staying on well to win over 2m. I think he has scope to continue to improve off his current handicap mark and again Oisin Murphy has to be considered a really strong jockey booking. Stall 10 is fine and I just think he’s well in here.
