2:00 York
The first race on ITV is the Queen Mothers Cup Handicap, a race for the female amateur jockeys over 1m4f.
The jockey is obviously crucial here and the fact Jody Townend is coming over to ride KIHAVAH (4/1) is a huge plus. She’s the best jockey in the race and Kihavah is won here off a mark of 81 last time out on the flat. He’s up 5lb but he’s more than capable of winning a race of this nature off that mark. He’s managed to also win over obstacles in the mean time and he’s clearly thriving at present. He’s the horse in best form with the best jockey on so he’ll do for me.
2:15 Sandown
The first of two races from Sandown comes up at 2:15 and it’s a mile handicap.
I like BODORGAN (10/3) here. The 3 year-old from the Charlie Hills stable looks open to a decent chunk of improvement this year and he made a very eye-catching return to action when finishing fifth at Haydock in what looked a decent contest. It looked a stronger race than this and off a mark of 87 here with Buick on board, he will do for me.
2:35 York
The 2:35 from York is a competitive 7f handicap.
The one for me is ELIGIBLE (5/1) NB who was a good winner here last time out at York last month. He was well fancied that day and he won that race well enough off a mark of 77 despite not getting the clearest of runs from off pace. Under similar conditions off just a 3lb higher mark, I think he is bound to go well here. There is plenty of pace on for him again here which is crucial and I think he looks sure to run a big one.
2:50 Sandown
The 2:50 from Sandown is the listed Scurry Stakes over the minimum 5 furlongs.
The one I like is KATEY KONTENT (18/1) EW. She was a decent win on her first two starts last season at 2 winning at both Salisbury and then again at Windsor. That was over a fast 5f which she’ll get again here. The second at Windsor completed a four-timer yesterday winning off a mark of 86 at York yesterday so the form is there. She was 6th in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot next time which was another encouraging effort. She could only manage sixth in her first run this season at Newbury but she was very fresh so that run will have done her good. The Clive Cox stable are in better form now and she’s a decent price in this.
3:05 York
We head back to York for the 3:05 and it is the Grand Cup Stakes, a listed race over 1m6f. The winner gets into the Ebor later in the year.
It’s ISRAR (7/4) NAP for me here who looks like the improver in here. He was a good second in a Group 3 last time out beaten a short head over 1m4f. This trip should be no problem, especially on the quick ground over the quick York track. He sits off the pace and will get a lovely toe into this off Quickthorn and Outbox. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t win this truth be told.
3:20 Chester
We go the Roudee for one race and it’s a tricky handicap over the extended 7f trip.
It’s SOPHIA’S STARLIGHT (6/1) EW for me here. She made all at Wetherby last time out winning well on fast ground and she gives the impression Chester will suit her well. She has plenty of early pace and she’ll hopefully be able to get to the front here from stall 2. That’s obviously the place to be at Chester and the booking of John Egan is encouraging as he rides this track as well as anyone.
3:40 York
The final race is a wide open 6f handicap to end proceedings.
I like QUINAULT (8/1) here who is clearly thriving at present. He’s won four time on the bounce and the rise in the weights didn’t stop her last time out at Newmarket where he won a shade cosily. He’s only been raised 5lb for that effort but apprentice jockey Connor Planas takes that 5lb back off. He has plenty of pace so can get a nice prominent position from the stalls but he has won over 7f too so clearly stays the trip well. He won’t be far away in my opinion.
