Horse Racing Tips: Four Win Bets for Goodwood and Newton Abbott on Sunday
Racing on Sunday afternoon comes from Goodwood and Newton Abbott.
We’ve run a rule over the more competitive races at both meetings and highlighted our four best win bets.
Goodwood
2:55 Great Sussex Way Handicap 6f
Atalanta’s Boy has won five of his seven starts over course and distance, including on his last outing six weeks ago, but has completely blown the start on the other two, so remains something of an enigma. Soft ground holds no terrors for him and he’s not impossibly handicapped, but he clearly has his quirks. Under the circumstances, Hugo Palmer’s 3-year-old filly Lovely Breeze may provide a safer option on this occasion. The ready winner of a fillies’ handicap over course and distance, on soft going, three starts ago, she is just 4lb higher in the weights here and should appreciate dropping back down in class.
Selection: Lovely Breeze
4:40 Goodwood Horse Racing Club Supporters Handicap 1m4f
Although he has yet to win beyond 1 mile 2 furlongs, Champagne Piaff looks well worth another try at 1 mile 4 furlongs and, in receipt of a 6lb weight-for-age allowance, looks to have bright prospects of winning for the third time in four starts. A winner on soft going as a juvenile, the son of excellent young sire Le Havre is 7lb higher in the weights than when winning at Epsom two weeks ago, but is clearly going the right way.
Selection: Champagne Piaff
Newton Abbott
2:02 William Hill Leading Racecourse Bookmaker Handicap Hurdle 3m2½f
Just one of the nine runners, Tobefair, has been seen in public since last spring, finishing tailed off last of four over course and distance last month, so backing anything requires something of a leap of faith. That said, while he is now an 11-year-old and hasn’t won for two years, Tobefair is well handicapped on his best form and merits close consideration. However, he could be vulnerable to younger legs and the concession of 13lb to the 5-year-old Ballymillsy may prove beyond him. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge should relish conditions and remains feasibly weighted.
Selection: Ballymillsy
3:47 Follow@WillHillRacing On Twitter Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase 2m½f
Only a handful of runners, but three of them make their debut over regulation fences, so this should be an informative, if slightly trappy, contest. French import Il Ridoto has already had two outings over the larger obstacles, finishing second, on soft going, at Bordeaux Le Bouscat and seems sure to have been well schooled by Paul Nicholls. However, it may be worth chancing the topweight, War Lord, whose sole win over hurdles last season came over 2 miles 3½ furlongs, but has looked like a steeplechaser-in-the-making for some time. All of his best form has come with plenty of cut in the ground.
Selection: War Lord
