ITV Racing Tips for 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket, Goodwood & Thirsk
1:50 Newmarket
The opener on ITV is a handicap over 1m1f known as the Suffolk Stakes. Bright Melody bids to transfer his useful Meydan form from earlier this year back on UK turf and he heads the market.
The one I like is BELL ROCK (4/1). This horse made his return here at Newmarket last year and his return was a winning one. Bell Rock went on to finish a fine third in the Cambridgeshire over this course and distance. I can forgive his final start last season at York on soft ground as it’s obvious good ground suits him. He gets the fast ground he relishes here today on a course we know he acts well on. Useful claimed William Carver takes off 5lb and I expect a bold bid.
2:05 Goodwood
We head to Goodwood for the next race on ITV. The 2:05 race is a listed contest over the 1m trip for the fillies. Maamora heads the market for the Crisford team and she brings Group 3 winning form to the table from last season and is sure to be there or thereabouts.
However, I like AMNIARIX (5/1) here. She is still unexposed and is progressing well in the early stage of her career. I get the impression we haven’t seen the best of her yet. She was an unlucky third last time out on the AW at Kempton behind Lavenders Blue but I think she will be well suited to this return to the turf. Oisin Murphy takes the ride and the Ed Walker team are in flying form at the moment.
2:25 Newmarket
We head back to Newmarket for the next race and this is the Palace House Stakes ran over 5f.
The one I like here is GARRUS NB (11/2) for the master sprint trainer Charlie Hills. Garrus was just touched off last time out at Newbury where he was beaten a short head by the re-opposing Came From The Dark. He is 4lb better off with that rival today and this course is likely to suit Garrus more given he likes to be up with the pace. Newmarket tends to favour front runners as we seen at the Craven meeting and Garrus can prove tough to go by here today.
2:40 Thirsk
We head to Thirsk for one race today too, it is the Thirsk Cup Handicap ran over 7f and 16 runners are set to go to post.
The one for me here is NUGGET (7/2). I thought he was pretty impressive when winning the Spring Cup at Newbury last time out and I get the impression he may prove to be better than a handicapper. The fast ground plays to his strengths and I expect him to go very close on a track that will suit his running style. They will go a strong pace here and I’m hopeful it’ll suit the closers.
3:00 Newmarket
The 3:00 race from Newmarket is the Jockey Club Stakes, a Group 2 contest ran over 1m4f. Fan favourite Pyledriver heads the market but I’m happy to take him on as I expect he’ll improve for the run.
The one for me here is AL ZARAQAAN (3/1). He has looks very useful winning his last four starts after disappointing on debut. Last time out at Kempton he won a Group 3 very easily from the front and I’m hoping he can complete similar tactics here today. The first run on turf is a slight negative but the fast ground will suit on pedigree. William Haggas remains in strong form and hopefully he can get in the winners enclosure on 2000 Guineas day here.
3:40 Newmarket
The 2000 Guineas is the final race from ITV and it’s a very competitive renewal. Thunder Moon is likely to prove very popular but I just worry this 1m trip might be a little too far. I expect him to look like the likely winner 2f out but fading before dropping in trip and winning the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.
I really like WEMBLEY NAP (4/1) here. He has everything in his favour. He is the choice fo Ryan Moore which is significant given he had the choice of most of the market principles. He improved throughout his 2-year old campaign and was unlucky on his final start when winning second behind St Marks Basilica in the Dewhurst. I think he was beaten by the draw that day and this step up to 1m will definitely suit the pair of them. Wembley will definitely improve for this first time on fast ground and I think we will get to see just how good he is now he gets his optimal conditions.
